Football: Oregon offense can’t overcome strong Sun Devils ■ Continued from Page 19 Even with a defense that was getting steamrolled, the Ducks’ of fense hung tough. Oregon quar terback Ryan Perry-Smith record ed the second best passing performance in school history, throwing for 468 yards on 29-of 56 passing and three touch downs. But it was an interception deep in Sun Devil territory that was his most telling pass. Down 34-13 to start the fourth quarter, Oregon scored on a 12 yard pass from Perry-Smith to tight end Blake Spence, cutting the lead to two touchdowns. Arizona State started its ensu ing drive from its own 10-yard line. After a batted pass by defen sive lineman Bryant Jackson and a sack of Sun Devil quarterback Jake Plummer that put the ball at the one-yard line, Arizona State was forced to punt out of its own endzone. With 10 minutes left in the game, Oregon started its next dri ve from the Sun Devils’ 45-yard line. After tailback Kevin Parker’s 10-yard pass reception and two carries of nine and five yards by fullback A.J. Jelks, Oregon had a first-and-10 on Arizona State’s 21-yard line. On the next play, Sun Devil linebacker Derek Smith stepped in front of a Perry-Smith pass for an interception, killing the Ducks’ drive and any hopes of a come back. Arizona State needed only 1:23 to capitalize on the turnover, dri ving the ball 62 yards in four plays — 50 of those yards coming on a Keith Poole reverse — to score a touchdown and making the score 41-20. The Ducks were able to score on their next possession on a 19 yard pass. Perry-Smith passed to flanker Damon Griffin for the ju nior’s second touchdown of the day. But the score was too little, too late for the Ducks, who, for the second week in a row, saw their offense struggle until the fi nal quarter. The loss gives the Ducks a 3-2 overall record and 0-2 in the Pac 10. Arizona State, on the other hand, is 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the Pac-10. Facing a must-win situation, Oregon will meet UCLA this Sat urday at Autzen Stadium in an at tempt to stop the bleeding and get back into the win column.
