Health Law and Animal Law will expand the School of Law’s coverage of legal topics. In addition, two courses are being introduced again: White Collar Crime and Immigration Law. According to University of Oregon Law Professor David Schuman, the interest in these courses is very high. The Law School added these experimen tal classes to “respond to areas of practice becoming more important and common,” Schu man said. The courses were approved by the School of Law Curriculum Commitee as experimental courses that are not yet a perma nent part of the curriculum. If there is enough ongoing student interest, these courses could become permanent after a cou ple of years. “It would be nice if these courses could be offered on a recurring basis,” Schuman said. All four additional courses will be taught by adjunct profes sors. An adjunct professor is not a full-time instructor but rather a professional practitioner who teaches a class in his or her field of expertise. “They bring a real-world per spective into the law school cur riculum,” Schuman said. Health Law will be offered during fall term 1996. The two credit course will be taught by Kurt Hansen, Esq. of the law firm Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt. The course will be a sequence of related lectures cov ering a variety of health-related legal issues such as government medical plans and their admin istration, and end-of-life issues such as advanced directives, confidentiality and malpractice. Animal Law, also offered for two credits, will be taught dur ing spring term 1997. Pamela Frasch, Esq. of the Animal Legal Defense Fund in Portland, Ore. and Scott Beckstead, Esq. of Waldport, Ore. will teach the course. The course will cover state, federal and common-law treat ment of animals as wildlife, lab fifi They bring a real-world perspective into the law school curriculum. — David Schuman UO Law Professor -„ oratory subjects, companions, game and livestock. White Collar Crime, offered for two credits during fall term 1996, focuses on embezzlement, bribery, tax fraud and other white-collar crimes. It will be taught by Chris Cardani, Esq., who is an assistant United States attorney in Eugene. Immigration Law, offered for two credits during spring term 1997, will cover legal issues and laws regarding immigration in the United States. It will be taught by Paul Hribernick, Esq. of Portland, Ore. For more information on any of the new courses, contact Pro fessor David Schuman at the School of Law.
