Must have Manual and Cable (where applicable). OPS officers take off the brown uniforms The officers in the University of Oregon Public of Office Safety are now donning new uniforms. All University public safety officers will wear white shirts with dark blue pants and short, dark blue jackets in cooler months. The new uniforms will replace existing brown garments — official badges and insignias will be similar to those on the older apparel. The new sleeve patches are identical to those worn by public safety personnel at other Oregon State System of Higher Education insti tutions. State approves bonus grants for students The State Scholarship Commis sion voted Friday to continue awarding bonus grants to some private college students while thousands of their peers at both private and public schools do not even receive the basic state grant. The recommendation will be in cluded in the SSC budget propos al to Governor Kitzhaber. Currently, needy students at all post-secondary schools are eligi ble for the basic Oregon Need Grant. Grant sizes are smallest at community colleges ($858) and largest at private colleges ($1,518). Grants at Oregon State System of Higher Education schools fall near the middle ($1,056). However, only private school students are eligible for an addi tional supplemental grant, in creasing their total state grant amount to as high as $3,228. Commencement to feature top conductor Marin Alsop, one of the world’s leading female classical music conductors, will deliver the 1996 University of Oregon summer commencement address at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 17, at the Memorial Quadrangle on the west edge of the campus. More than 900 degree candi dates are eligible to participate in commencement, which will be held outdoors, rain or shine. Tick ets are not needed for the free public event. UNIVERSITY During the ceremony, Alsop will receive one of the Universi ty’s highest honors, the Distin guished Service Award. The fac ulty chose Alsop for the award because of her enormous impact on the cultural enrichment of all Oregonians though her leadership in developing music programs for people of all ages in the commu nity and in establishing a world class summer music festival showcasing American music in Eugene. An internationally honored conductor, performer and educa tor, Alsop assumed the music di rector’s post at the Eugene Sym phony Orchestra in 1989, which was the highest conducting posi tion any woman held in the world at that time. Five years ago, she helped found the Oregon Festival of American Music and became its founding artistic director and conductor. Flux receives more national recognition Already honored with more than a dozen awards, Volume 3 of Flux, the annual magazine pro duced by students in the Univer sity of Oregon School of Journal ism and Communication, recently earned five more honors. The 48-page issue, with the theme “Voices of the World," earned first place in the student magazine division for the best sin gle issue of an ongoing magazine from the Association for Educa tion in Journalism and Mass Com munication. The magazine also earned the Society of Professional Journal ists’ Mark of Excellence Award for the best student magazine among the annual publications. Sean Smith and Colleen Pohlig both won awards for stories they wrote for the issue of Flux. Lori Hinton earned an award for an in dividual magazine project.
