Michelle Reyna Accounting Street Scuzz We are shocked and pro foundly disturbed at Kelly Andersson's polemic against the "street sc um" who congregate around the Wes! University area (April 1. ODE). While w* »ym pathiae with her apparent dis comfort Is purchasing her "double mocha breves" at Coffee People, we ask Andersson to closely consider her use of tan guage when she marginalises people who consciously choose not to live according to her stan dards of tolerance We identify a basic dichotomy at work when Andersson divides the world into two fioles "law abiding people." ike herself, and the "law break or*," whose very existence is in need of "sterilization ." By refer ring la and identifying herself with the lew end the social h»er archy it wnw to uphold, AmWsson positions those "dirt hege" as an invalid other relative to her rung on the social ladder that happen* to enjoy a close proximity to power in our soel etv We believe that AmterMoo * polemic exposes the social rung that she occupies when she ask*. “Mow dare these people slouch armmd in our midst’" In short, she renders her own lifestyle uniquely legitimate Further, we are amased that Anderston's only expressed motive for helping people Is guilt or merited corn passion We understand, however, that It is difficult to muster compassion for someone whom we consider to be less than human or at least leas than ourselves Ran Alexander Pontcel Science day Llntngar History and Political Soane# Vote Sorenson I support Peter .Sorenson, who is running for a position as lane County Commissioner Pete is unusually qualified He has served in the Dragon •Slate Senate, been a volunteer member of the lane Community College Education Board and worked as a staff person in the US Congress. In the private sector, he has run his own Jaw business, litigating environmen tal cases and gaining the respect of hi* peers As a many year res idem of Lane County, he has raised two children, actively participated at his church and volunteered with after-school Kklsports activities Most importantly.
