The good new* U that it will not emit a* many pollutant* into the atmosphere a* Williams Bakery. Weyer haeuser Co. or the Universi »y — all of which individually pump out more pollutant* than Hyundai will The recent argument against the new Hyundai factory, currently under construction in Weal Eugene, is that Eugene sim ply cannot afford to have the added pollutant* in it* air. The argument for the factory i* that it will lie one of the least polluting facto ries in Eugene For a school that is known as being the most politically active and environmentally conscious in the country, we certainly are contribut ing our fair share of pollu tants: 270 Ions of omission* each year It is not only ironic, hut also quite embarrassing that we send methanol, hexane, hydrochloric acid, benxano. toluene and hydrofluoric acid into Lane County's atmosphere more regularly than factories such as Coun try Coach Inc. and Williams Bakery We are pleased with nei ther the current number of omissions (hat the local fac tories release nor the pro tected number of emissions that the Hyundai factory will contribute because either way. it's a lose-lose situation What we have to decide is if we are going to let content allowing the problem to get worse because 'at least it won't be hurting the envi ronment that much more " But the truth about thu new factory is that the first entity it harms might not be the environment, but you. The tonic pollutant* and hazardous chemicals that you will be breathing in IS month* after the Hyundai factory begin* production are a* follow* arsenic, ammonia, chlorine, and hydrofluoric acid — to name a few, We don't know about you. but to us the idea of breathing arsenic i* Just not that much fun The odd* of our generation getting cancer are great enough a* it is. The other problem this new factory pose* lie# with in the logistics of the emis sions permit It covers only the first phase of produc tion. The second phase could double the allotted emissions of that permit, and the third phase could double that Though this is the modem age and Wilding factories is now an everyday occ ur rence, we should not accept the throats posed to our health The fac tory's emissions, when combined with Eugene's current enmsiuns. could have damaging effects. I (bund your article to be grossly inaccurate in its representation of the events that led to the disso lution id that community at the end of winter term Michael Kyster. Director of Housing, was quot ed as saying that the reason the floor was dis banded was because of a racial slur that was yelled last term during “primal scream " This 1* totally false I am very disappointed that a campus wide publication would print a story that has such a hug* potential for character dam age without at least consulting both parties involved. You falsely imply thsi the whole door »#« responsible or parly to iho slur. and I find thi* estremely disturbing Doug Irving [Emerald reporter! showed unprofeesionalism by not talk ing to anyone from Douglass In it raid he labeled us all racists Ureal angle Doug Ha conveniently tied this incident in with our dissolution, imply ing with hi* quote of Eytter that everyone on the floor was racist and that that was the reason we were kicked out The true reason the fourth floor of Douglas* was disbanded was the combination of a large volume of incident reports and damage* charged lo our floor In fact, the final Incident that was cited as the deciding factor lo disband was a cigarette burn in a "Quiet Hours' sign The Office of Public Safe ty wa* called by kelly Messick. Resident Director of Walton, who reported that arson had occurred We received our notice to vacate the nest day; it accused us of "reckless burning “ Nothing was mentioned about the incident with Adam* Hall and there was no implication that the incident was. in any tansy, a factor in the decision to disband It is outrageous that the former residents of the fourth floor of Douglas* were smeared in your arti cle. and I found it very insulting that no one from the Emerald spoke to us before the article ran It is unfortunate that Doug Irving sacrificed his integrity as a (oumalist by sensationalising this Incident and defaming the character of the former residents of the fourth floor of Douglass As a former resident. I am shocked and angered that the Emerald chose to handle the incident in this manner, thereby misinforming the entire cam pus about the events feeding to the dissolution of my floor and. at the same time, falsely label ing me as a racist.
