VIEWPOINTS tPtlOflULS OPINIONS UTTIBS TQ THE tPlTQW Students will decide for future in primary ■ OUR OPINION: Voters writ cast tt^esr ballots for 13 important measures Today and Thursday, stu dents will oast ballots for a new ASUO executive and several other offices and issues Here are the Eater aid'* suggestions for the 13 billot measures facing the University community. • Measure 30. Designated Driver Shuttle *— Yes. Pro* vide* students with an alter native to drinking and driving. • Measure 31, Ethnic Studies — Yea This mea sure would support the development and Imple mentation of an Ethnic Studies major program at the University. • Measure 32. Family (^enier/Child Care — Yet Students who choose to bet tor themselves by getting an education while raising their children deserve not only our admiration, but a Family Center as well • Measure 33, KWVA pro motions — Yes. Thu mea sure would allow KWVA to promote itself through vari ous advertising means • Measure 34, KWVA stipend supplement — Yes. Would give raises to KWVA "volunteers" who currently make only $75 a month. The station broadcasts music and information 24 hours a day. 365 days a year • Measure 35, KWVA satellite and broadcast equipment — Yes Some of KWVA’s broadcast equip ment is 20 to 30 years old. It's lime to get KWVA’s staff out of the museum and into the modern day of broadcast technology. Yes on 35 will give broadcasting students hands-on experience with the kind of equipment they will see after they graduate • Measure 36, Uongview Magazine — No. The Uni versity already supports *ev oral on-campus publications that Longview might want »o look into tnaming up with • Measure 37, OSPIRG — Voter's preference. OSPIRG provides a valuable and measurable service to stu dents. the campus commu nity and the environment, but we are disappointed with the “all-or nothing way OSPIRG seeks funding for itself every two years. OSPIRG should give stu dents more options for fund ing decisions. • Measure 30, Initiative in Support of Financial Aid — Yes This would give the ASUO the power to declare corporations that work to limit or eliminate student financial aid programs •‘unwelcome* on our cam pus. • Measure 40, Career Can ter — Ye*. This center pro vides students with career counseling and information on pari-time jobs, intern ships, and full-time employ ment. The center, with its tiny reference library, is cur rently jam-packed into three or four over-crowded rooms in Hendricks. The center needs more computers for career access use and a new building to put them in. Scotten had a natural abil Ity to talk with people in an hon est and approachable way. Our hard work paid off and we were able to register more students than any other school in Oregon m well a* gam national attention for our efforts One of Scatter* and Han field's goal* for the next year ia to secure a student conduct code As students, we deserve to feel and be safe on campus An explicit student conduct code will aet the tone for the envi ronment of our campus, describe what constitutes consensual relations and sexual harassment and make the grievance policy student friendly What set* Scotten and Ban field apart hum other candidate* U that they will not only work to establish a good policy, but they will ensure that it's actual ly implemented Students’ voic es will he vital to issues like these A* with the Votes- Regis tration Campaign. Scotian and Banfleld will be on the streets mobilising students to ensure that our voices are heard Students elected into the ASUO Executive are going to have an impact on your life as a college student. The ASUO will lobby at the state and federal lev els on issues such as financial aid and higher education Next year's Voter Registration Campaign will determine whether or not students' voic es are heard In the presidential election The students elected will work with the University administration on issue* such as sexual harassment, student con duct and the implementation of an Ethnic Studies Program The decision* mad* over the next veer will affect every student on this campus It's in your best interest to vote in the upcoming election* After threw years at this Uni versity, I've grown weary of watching the same people doing the seme things in Suite Four. It is very important for all students to participate in the upcoming election and choose candidates who can allocate funds to enrich our diverse environment intellectually. H. Aleena Kliever is miming for seat on# on the PFC- As a member of the PFC, her goal ia to ensure that every activity has a purpose that will enrich our intellectual learning experi ence How activities affect the University community factors into her decisions on who receives funds Kliever has worked with peo ple of various backgrounds and thrives on interacting with them She has been serving Car son Hall, our culturally diverse residential community, as a Resident Assistant (RA) for two years She has had experience in budget decisions in her numerous positions as an accountant for the Bella Union and as an RA. handling resi dence hail activity funds. Several of us have visited the Family Center in the former Amazon complex and found it to be an incredible resource for those who use it. The Family (.enter saves student* money through their cooperative meth ods with student parents and enables <V3 percent of the single parents using the Family Co-op to attend the University. The money from ballot mea sure* 32 and 41 will cover the com to move the Family Center to its new facility on the site of the former Amazon complex and help staff the infant/toddter pro gram Voting yes on these two measures is a win-win situation fur students because 70 percent of the funds will come back to students in the form of employ ment opportunities.
