As you ma\ have lu-.ud, many students have com plained about problems in the affirmative ac t ii >n puxe,v> that range from inadequate response tunes to Ix-ing told that they could not file formal complaints about harass ment. Becau.sc the Affirmative Action Ofhee is part of the l mversitv, it is m a position of Kith trying to ensure student needs are met as well as trying to conrrihute to the success of the university as a whole In such cases, the student's interests are usually adverse to the l ’lUWTJtV'' and often the [ Vuu-rays needs win. This con flu t of interest IK ed' to I H- [ftn« 1\ I d It students art* to feci sate on campus. I In- Affirmative Ac non Office needs to be taken off i am pus where n can invest it;.tie and decide these cases with true neutraht\ and fairness as an independeni, third party to the conflk t. I have fi >und that students have a lireat deal of mtlu' eiu e on our aca demic life. I here are rune .u auerou student senators who represent academic Inter e.sts on campus These senators and myself re cent!y formed the Ac a demic Counc il. ! he Academic (’ounc il will focus its attention on issues ranging from c urrtc iilm to tenure. We es ant to foe us on iTwinges that will increase the level of ac ademic quality on c ampus 'students are paying more for their education and I believe that students have a vested interest in ensuring the quality of that education. The ms idental fee budget process has started for next year II is my responsihlity to make recommendations on eac h budget and provide final approval on the budgets I cannot do this without your help and input. Please come to me with your feedback on the services and programs that arc funded v> i <. an use this information when I make my decisions In avidinon to working w it fa all the hranc hes of student government and making sure the inc idental fee process operates smoothly and effectively, I have been working to make sure that students' voices are heard at all levels.>t the l mversity governing structure. Although the uphill battle to increase student votes on the l niversity Senate has not yet been won, I have appointed students to over fifty voting seats on l!niversity com mtifecs, the working groups that make policy dec.isions or rev i >mmenJat!Ons on issues that range from what the library could do better to what courses are going to lx- taught next year. As well, I meeLc-.u h week with University adminis trators to ensure that no policy is approved that would lx- detrimental to the student body.
