Soon the state will lost> its distinction as one of the few places in the nation still pumping leaded gasoline. Amendments to the federal Clean Air Act bon the sale of leaded fuel for highway use nationwide after fan l. JOOfi While leaded gas is already a thing of the past in many regions nationwide, some service stn lions in Kugene are among a select group in the Pacific North west that haven’t yet phased out the fuel. Owners of the old vehicles an? having to switch to unloaded gasoline that works just fine in their engines — but costs up to 10 cents more per gallon than leaded gas. Eugene Texaco stations stopped selling leaded fuel last fall, Chevron converted to all unleaded pumps on May 1 r> Most BP. Shell and Arco stations will make the switch this month. The station sells 300 to 400 gallons of leaded gasoline a dav. compared to more than 3,000 gallons of unleaded fuels. Over the past two decades, the U S. Environmental Protection Agency has gradually cut the lev el of lead it allows in leaded fuel. Now, leaded gasoline is allowed to have only 0.1 grams of lead per gallon, down from 4 grams in the early 1970s. Also. iars made since l‘)7ri can use only unleaded fuel.
