■ ENTERTAINMENT Oregon Country Fair will entertain folks of all ages Kim Weiss Owg&t Oatjc tr*m0O Are vou looking for a week end of fun and excitement but don't know where to go? Look no further than the outskirts of Veneta because the Oregon Country Fair will shake the weekend up. The annual event Is celebrat ing its -if>I h year of existent e and has lots of entertainment, great food and t rafts for everyone to enjoy. The fair will provide HI stage-, of music and entertainment throughout the weekend Vari ous genres uj musii willite pet formed, including everything from reggae to folk to ncoustii rock to jug hand Actors Cabaret of Fugene (with musical excerpts from Hair), Artis the Spoonmnn. and Jim Page and Shakin" Snakes, playing acc elerated rhythm and blues, an* a few of the mainstage performers for Friday Mythic Sky. i yberspace age sounds. Daniel Pearson f or tha Oregon Dotty Emerald A simple melody drifts from a guitar, bounces around the room, spirals down toward the happily dancing crowd, splits open and melts into everyone's oars The music slowly crescendos and ris es from the stage in a rainbow of sound. The sound is as soothing as a bedtime lul laby and takes the listener on a delicate ride, like a leaf across a tranquil pond. The band continues to build its sound painting into an unbelievable climax, drawing its energy from an audiont e that will be exhausted by night's end. For years the only way Phish-Headx experienced the excitement generated at a Plush show was in concert or by seeking out the poor sound quality produced from bootleg tapes But Plush emerged irum i iiu Miaiiu m Juno with a two-CD set ( illIt'd .-1 /jiff O/if. whii h captures tin* (Kind's concert oxpe rience and somo oMuinniir in full, digi tal sound. Phish gives old favorites like 'Pouncing Around the Room. ' "Stash" and The Squirming Coil" new life with lung impru vised jams. alongside songs never before recorded that ini hide "Slave to tfie Traf fic l.ight," "Wilson" and "Harry Hoik) " Standouts ini hide "You Knjov Myself" with the chorus no one ever seems to understand, " 1‘weozor." and a fun little tune called "Simple." highlighting the tiand's humor and vocal abilities “Simple" is interesting hei ause the chord progression is carried by the vocals rather than tty the instruments a tech tuque rarely used In Western music, esjte i inlly rock'n'roll. Instead of n two-minute spot on the album, where a good hoe-down would’ve fit nii fly, tlif space is filled v\ith .1 rather boring instrumental called "Montana." which kind of sits there like ft fi remit ker th.it never goes off For anyone who has over heard of Flush, hot never heard them play. A /.ivr One is an excellent introduction And for all you l*hish Heads out there complaining about the song 1 holt es (and you know who you are), now there is a dei ml rei ording to enjoy along with a good puff Phinally!
