May said "I know it wasn't me who con vinced her The real key player was De Jesus. He talked to Aquino often, and he is a very persuasive person “ De Jesus had attended Yale University with May in the 1970s and had visited May at the University ol Oregon m 1986 'De Jesus gave our oiler some strong credibility," May sad Aquino deeded to accept the University's invita tion to speak at the Class ot 1995's spring com mencement and receive the first honorary degree to be bestowed by the University in 49 years University President Dave Frohnmayer will con fer the honorary degree and preside over the com mencement Following commencement, members of the pubic may greet Aquino at a reception in her honor from 4-5 p m af the covered tennis courts on East 15th Avenue adjacent to Hayward Field Aquino was born in 1933 into one ol the wealthier families in the Philippines and neither sought nor expected power In 1983. however, she landed in the center of the political scene after the assassina tion of her husband, opposition leader Benigno Aquino Jr , who was killed by soldiers toyal to the former president Ferdinand Marcos Marcos ruled the Philippines under martial law during his 21 years in power Swept into the presidency by the "people power revolution" in a 1986 general election. Aquino renounced Marcos' legacy of dictatorial powers and restored a democratic system of government During her 31* years in office, Aquino implement ed checks and balances on executive power, presided over a senes of free elections and disman tled monopolies controlled by the allies of Marcos Her presidency also endured attempted coups, mili tary revolts, typhoons, floods, droughts, a maior earthquake and a volcanic eruption In a 1992 tree election, Aquino handed over power to her chosen successor. Fidet Ramos, who was her defense secretary .and the former chief of staff under Marcos Since that time Aquino has not served the Philip pine government in any official capacity, but is an active goodwill ambassador and a vocal advocate of human rights and women's issues, making trips abroad to deliver her messages "We teel we have reinstated the honorary doctor ate with the right person and the eight level of atten tion and prestige," said David Hubin, executive assistant to the president. "Aquino is an important role model She took it upon herself to restore democracy to her country and she carried that man tle with great distinction." Susan Ptass, a University assistant vice provost in. the International Aftairs Office, said the honorary doctorate was discontinued in 1946 when University officials began to question its purpose In 1991 former University President Myles Brand created a distinguished services awards committee to reevaluate honorary degrees, said Plass, who is organizing Aquino'S visit The committee decided to reinstate the honorary doctorate with the idea that it would only be bestowed on individuals whose accomplishments are internationally, or critically recognized. Plass said. This will be Aquino's first honorary doctorate degree She received an honorary law degree (rom Fu Jen Catholic University in Taipei, Taiwan, after a visit to the Republic ot China aimed at promoting peace and prosperity in the Asian Pacific region, in 1993 Kim Ribellia, president of the Philippines Student Organization, said Aquino's leadership in the Philip pines should serve as positive example ot dedica tion and motivation tor all students on campus.
