■ LETTERS Dump cops? Il fun lo drink, gel wasted, break things, get loud and obnoxious and sat fires' I haven't had so much fun in years' I also find it hilarious to see my tax dollars spent on cleaning up my mess after I've destroyed the city's and other's property And why do we need police, anyway ? They just get in the wav of having fun! Next elec turn 1 opt we all vote for "no more cops in Kugene'" Yeah! The next time my buddies and 1 detide to have a good time. 1 can burn the whole house down if I feel like it There will be no tear gas to stop mv buds and I from throwing bottles at innocent people passing by Or maybe I should grow up and gel n brain J D McCarty Eugene Preaching? Walking to rny i lass in Allen Hall last week. I first heard, then saw some kind ol disturbance over near the EMU courtyard Turns out it was “Bible Jim.” that aggressive Bible-thumper that many people love to hate, or at least love to disagree with I'm one of the latter. After class. I walked dose to the small and justifiably vocal crowd of people who surround ed Jitn, but 1 didn't stop to listen to his "message " 1 didn't have lo. Jim's message, one of anger and intolerance, was shouted even before Jie opened his mouth. His message, plastered in bumper-like stickers all over the sandwich board he wore, preached a gospel ol division and hate unlike any "real" Christian message I have ever encountered. if Jim's "preaching" has any merit at all. it is completely wiped out — voided — by his presentation. In a word, the guy is bogus. Like hundreds of other peo ple. 1 went to the Harvest Cru sade The gospel I heard there was one of love and at t eptance, not in-your-face labels or mean stereotypes Nothing was said there that would make anyone fiw>l like an unwanted outcast From what I've heart! and read about Jesus Christ. I’ve learned that the man wot ierv compassionate He truly cared about and loved all kinds of peo ple He was ns gentle ns a lamb, ns wise ns a fox and as coura geous and confident as a lion If Jesus still walked the earth today. I don’t think he would show up on campus with signs saving "queers ' or “sinners" or “premarital sex." Instead. I bet he'd just walk right up and hug you David P Bartlett Pre-Journalism Social justice? It has l**on said that a mob has a mind of its own It is indeed true that when people gather in numbers, the resulting anonymi ty gives individuals the strength to do things they wouldn't nor mally do As you may have already guessed. 1 am writing this letter in response to the Friday night si mio on 17th Avenue and Hil yard Street There are very few things more pathetic than what 1 wit nessed that night 1 saw a group of high schoolers. . hildish col lege students and various other tag-alongs unite in their inebri ated state to challenge the Kugene police to a matt h of wills. Bottles were thrown, street signs were torn out of the ground and various fires were set in a melee of mindless vio lence. As I watched this activity, I though to myself, "Wouldn't it be great if there was an actual social justice that was being protested here? Wouldn't it be great if these people were a< til ally fighting for something they believed in?" Unfortunately, this was not the situation. The only cause for their behavior was drunken stu pidity. As a college student. I like to pride myself somewhat in the fad that 1 have matured just a tad hit since l left high school. This, obviously, cannot he said of the "rtibels" of the party I looked Into the crowd and could honestly not tell who was in high school ami who was in t ollege The crowd had taken on the mentality of a ttHh-gr»der in the throes of puberty as ma< his mo took the place of any intelli gence that had previously exist ihI tn these people. 1 desperately hope that the spectacle Fridav night was an exception, rather than a rule, of college life Josh Curtis History Thanks I'm writing today to sini erely thank all of the people who organired and participated in tlu> first University Community Involvement Week held May I t 19 Because of your coinmunity semi i! efforts, the Kugene com munity ami the University are in the pro* ess of renewing faith in our relationship as partners An extended thanks goes out to all the student groups that parti* ipated, espei lally Mortar Hoard, Alpha Phi Omega.
