Electr-O-Pura is more varied and generally the songs are more catchy Many ot the songs on this album just sound perfect not m the sense that they are overpro duced Each song has so much life and emotion in it that >t feels i>ke breathing fresh air through your ears “Decora * the opening track, is an interplay of layered guitars, bass and drums, with Georgia Hubiey softty singing Her voice I lectr-O-Pura ★ ★ ★★ * is extremely clear, and She hits every hole with brilliant accuracy On “Flying Lesson," Yo La Tango sounds a lot like Goo-era Sonic Youth. creating the (ee!mg of tension and sadness, with Kaplan singing and Hubfey whispering which adds on to the effectiveness of the song Several tracks, such as 'The Hour Grows Late are very s ow. recalling Neil Young's soft er moments *Pabto and Andrea" aiso has a toiky sound to it and with Hubfey s .v >ge ■ voice, this wouldn’t be out ot place on an Indigo Girts album Ar, always. Yo La Tengo cre ates a tew experimental tracks "The Ballad of Red Buckets.* is one of these, and it's actually a great song It starts off with some weird guitar noises amt makes them sound like a garage band t! <s complete with Kaplan s distorted vocals and tfippy organ bits scattered nro «po sntal Be treat doesn't matter tt i$ very difficult to categorize the styte ol muSiC Vo La Tengo play Perhaps this why they are not that popular they don’t neatly fan into the stupid cate gooes and buzzwords that the music industry has created to. sell more records Yo la Tongo >s basically a great 'ock band, incorporating guitar -experimen tation, melodic pop and folk It you have not had a chance to hear them, get Electr-O-Pura. >1 won t be disappointing It you know them, you already under Stand - LES ZACZEK MOORE Continued fnm Page HA was a disappointment m the ghl of their past work Thurston Moore, t?ie guitar genius of Sonic Youth teamed up with Steve Shelley. aiso from the band, to create Psychic Hearts, as a side project Over all. Psychic Hearts is not a far departure from Sonic Youth's work There are some differ ences. such as the tack of Kim Gordon Also Qooe are Sonic Youth's trademark guitars that made ben sounds Psychic Hearts, in the tradition of Some Youth, continues to use deferent styles as metaphors for Creating a new sound It’s defi nitely not as radically expert mental as the earlier Some Youth, instead it is an insight to Moore s ideas, and his style of performing and writing There is an overaii feeling of emptiness, hollowness, and despair on this alburn The songs are on the verge of chaos, but instead of erupting, they 'inpiode. c losed in by Moore's voice and the gutars "Ono Soul," is an example of this, it’s a very dam song, recall mg Sonic Youth s album. Siste' It’s one of the best songs of the album Other standouts include ‘Patti Smith Math Scratch,* a catchy song with a last beat, and ’Cindy ’ a track with a funk sound 'Stanng Statues.’ is very bluesy with Moore piaymg a siide guitar There are several instrumental tracks as wen, such as ‘Biues From Beyond the Grave.' which starts with a pleasant melody, goes mto some guitar distortion. and comes bat* !o a quiet, yet sinister melody And o! course there is the last track, a 20 minute instrumental venture Vos, Sonic Youth have aged and yn*. Thurston Moore doe1, n't sound as 'punk* as he did 10 years ago but the fact remains that he ts stilt one of the best and most inventive guitarists alive, and that together with Steve Shelley's excellent drum rrung. he can still make a brilliant album Moore and Sonic Youth deserve to be more then just an 'influence* • Ihey deserve to be listened to, because their music is great LES ZACZEK TEAR OUT THIS AD AND NAIL IT TO THE WALL!
