EDITORIAL ‘Emerald’ endorsed Williamson/Kelton Last week the Emerald editorial board endorsed Jennifer Williamson and Zachary Kelton for ASUO president and vice president {ODE, April 17). because of underhanded campaign trick* by their opponents, Chris Kantrowitz and Niki Scott, we believe it is nec essary to reaffirm our endorsement. Knntrowitz and Scott are trying to get voters to believe they are the candidates ondorsed by the Emerald. On Tuesday they passed out fliers with the Emerald masthead that said "Thank you for your sup port." Wo did not give the candidates permission to use our logo and do not support their campaign. Another Knntrowitz/Scott flier said the Emerald endorsed Kantrowitz's work on the Programs Finance Committee. The Emerald publisher! an editorial April 14 that praised the efforts of the PFC, of which Kantrowitz is only one member. He was never specifi cally mentioned in the editorial, and cannot claim solo credit for the PPC's accomplishments. Thu choice for ASUO Executive is clear. Williamson and Kelton are tho best qualified and most experi enced candidates They articulate reasonable and real istic solutions to University problems. They have demonstrated professionalism, which is something their opponents seem to be lacking. Vote yes on 12; fund Career Center Unless you don't want a job after college, vote yes on Ballot Measure 12. Measure 12 adds $3 to tho students’ incidental foe per term to expand and fund the Career Center. Currently, the Career Center charges various fees for its services, which, if fully utilized, amounts to about $75 per student. The Career Center is one of the most valuable resources on campus. Virtually everyone on this cam pus needs help with resumo writing, interviewing skills and job searching Measure 12 will provide the center an opportunity to expand its services to include career assessment and vocational training, career counseling and campus interviews and internships and employment opportunities. Although tho foe will t>e automatically assessed to every student, the Career Center will be cheaper to use if the measure passes. It doesn't take a genius to set* what’s better.$.1 or $75 Students have complained that the Career Center is only useful to people pursuing business-related jobs I bis measure would give tho center an opportunity to reach students looking for jobs in a wide range of fields. A ft-A/V — ■ LETTERS Injustice I am writing this letter in response lo the article on Mon day regarding Taxi Malejreai and Paul Wiggins (ODK. April 24) You did a terrible injustii e to thorn- two incfrv iduals when you singled them out anil made their records public It had absolutely no relevance to your story You used this information to slander their names in the Uni versity community l or those of us who know Tasi and Paul, it's common knowledge that these are two ot the most kind and sin cere persons on campus Then one must look at the people in the community who do not know them, such as professors and classmates, who will now have a tainted view of what these indi viduals an* really like All your article did successfully was fur ther promote the negativ e stereo types of football players and especially those of t olor. The article was extremely biased Next tune, do the research and get both aides of the story, or do you know how to do that? The footlvali players are in a ven vul nerable position Every a< tion they take on and off the field is often made public When a foot ball player is involved in fights, c barges are almost automatical ly filed Does this happen to the average student on campus? I also did not appreciate your quo tation about the "big circle of black guys" who were heating up innoc ent students That quota tion yvas clearly used to instill fear in the white students, etc. Your article was a perfect example of the insensibility that this campus and your newspaper have toward people of color Clearly, the more things change, the more they stay the same Marianne Preudhomme Eugene Discontent My name is Lori Leong and I would like to express my deep est discontent at Programs Finance Committee member Chris Kantrowitz. He is an incompetent PFC member and has not truthfully represented our program We originally appeared in front of the PKC to present our budget, but were uninformed about a rule that was passed by the Senate the night before, lim iting new programs to only $300. Our original request was imme diately rejected and m the peri od between our hearing and our apjwal date, we learned that this rule was not binding upon our program. However, at our budget appeal hearing, the PFC members, including Chris kantrowitz. decided to refer us to the Student Senate, claiming that they were not sure if the new rule was bind ing upon us If we were aware of this non-binding effect, why wasn't the committee aware' This is just plain and simple ignorance on their part. We then approached the Senate with 30 plu* members to ask them to reconsider our budget Chris Kantrowitz blatantly lied that he was in support of our group (in between frequent snoozes). He vans a member that moved to grant us only S UM. hut in front of the Senate and 30-plus Hawaii Club members, he claimed he was definitely in support of our club re* wiving sufficient funds in excess of the Item hrnark How can we have this kind ol contradictory leadership in our Executive next year? Lori Leong Hawaii Club Elections Chairwoman Outraged 1 am writing to you in response to your article on the misconduct of football players (ODE. April 24) I, myself, am a memtwr of the Oregon football team and after reading your article, I was extremely outraged Student ath letes do not receive preferential treatment from anyone. In fart, we as student athletes have to Iw more prudent of our actions than traditional students. All student athletes, not just football players, live in a fish bowl All of our actions, both on and off the field, are closely observed and reported by reporters such as yourself There fore. when a student athlete runs into trouble with the law, or makes a mistake (because wo are human), it becomes front page news. The media seem to forget that we are human beings who, at times, err like everyone else You want to set us apart from the rest of the student body, yet there is no difference between us All students, regardless of whether they are on an athletic team or not, work very hard to achieve their personal goal, whether it is becoming the edi tor of a newspaper, ASl’O pres ident. starting for the football team, or just graduating from col lege This article showed readers one side of the sjx* truin, the run ins with the lavs by student ath letes — to bn more specific, mem bars of the football team 1 lowuver, l see no mention of oth er similar run-ins w ith the law by non-athletes This article tells readers that football players are the only students on campus that have encounters with the law We, as student athletes, know that we do not receive any sort of special treatment just because we wear a uniform on Saturday In fact, I would say it is the exact opposite We have less freedom to do anything because of reporters, such as yourself, who stand behind every corner, observe our actions and wait for us to make a mistake to get a front page story.
