MUSIC Royal Trux show soul on Thank You’ Every once in a while comes an aibum with so much raw emo tion ar»b power that it finds its way onto the CD-piayer more often than anything else Although Jennifer Herrema and Net! Hagerty's songs aren’t parncu tarty catchy or easy to understand, they have ’sous' something that ts unfortunately often miss mg »n today's over-produced. poMshed, corporate crap that gets labeled as 'alternative * When the 80. garage-punk out fit Pussy Gatore broke up, the members went on to form the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and Royal Trux Even though both bands had blues based sounds, '.he Blues E xpiosion took a more hip-hop and funk approach Royal Trux, on the other hand, became a more experimental and much dark er blues band, drawing compar isons to bands such as Some Youth and Come The band's early work often got dismissed as junkie-musc, or an experimental drug-garage band, but this album should definitely sol the record straight Royal Trux have become a brilliant band, with roc Hunk You jftpttf fm\ a grea! album lo prove st Hagerty's !ascma!K>n with th© Rofttng Stones ^ bv ■ dent m h<s Sly‘<« o( playing guitar and (he general loose ness of the songs Pussy Gakxe once covered !ho wt i '•*? : < >• ot' Mm Street album One of the my® dis tinctive aspects of Royal Tru* sound are the vocals Herrema has a raspy bluesy voce a cross between Janis Joplin and Sonic Youth s Kim Gordon When Hager ty -s Singing with Herrema. this is especially effective as the voces complement each other west Also present is the percussion, when adds a more rhythmic feeling, even though the drums sound very we!! T he bass player provides an interesting backdrop to the sound scape Thank You hits no low points since every song s really good There are. however, several stand Outs. such as the surprisingly catchy 'Ray-O-Vac' and 'Lights the t eveo ‘ There $ no so! mood few too album but there s a f©ef• »ng of destruction and decay that may be associated with Hagerty and Herrema's urban surroundings and drug use. as in 'Shadow of the Wasp * which :nc odes the lines ‘ with tfie trash piling on tor S'X weeks now. this !twi realty stinks everything s so crowded now ' To best deser be what Royal T?u* sound tike, imagine what it would be : ke if the Rolling Stor es grew up m the early 'go* listening to punk and became a garage band with a female singer This is Simply great biues/rock with a garage-punk attitude Fry those who have not heard the band, this <s definitely the<r most accessible work to date and for fans of Royal Tru* thea major label debut might iust be Shea best album so far They have groat potential, obvious throughout Thank Vdu, and hope futiy we will be seeing more of them - LES ZACZEK Water plays good, catchy songs Their record company, MCA descriDes Water as a melting pot of Anglo-rock and south ern an-pop influences tran scends the traditional boundaries ol punk, pop and alter native " The word "punk' repeat edly pops up in the bio/press release I'm not a punk tan so I don't know a whole lot about the genre but I do know that Nipple, Water's debut, is not punk As tar as being alternative isn't everything nowadays7 Whatever genre one wishes to put Water in doesn't really matter They wrue and play good, catchy songs "Spin* in particular has been m my head since I first lis Nipple Wole' tened !o it Some songs have an ethe real sound, others realty kick in with some nee grooves, but none are very heavy Dean Bradley s vo«ce iS reminiscent of Michael Stipe throughout van ous parts ot the CD. but not so much as to be labeled a R E M clone Mark Cohen, bass Howie lead guitar, and John Guest drums, round out this fledgling band from Orange County Cant Th©tr lyrics have the typical themes of struggle, iove, freedom and philosophy Often times the songs are so abstract that >t >s hard to figure out exactly what they're taking about The lyrics tc 'Oven* are ’step up to the ovon/weicome to the oven/she wans, she waits/ step up to the . wu f% si ii * w i h.
