Basket found near coast
indicates prior earthquake

You could say they dug up
wmc evident e
For the past 10 voars or so,
scientists have been digging
around the coastal areas of
Oregon for evident e of past
earthquakes in this region
They finally hit the (at kpot
at Nehalem Hay
Geologists from the U.S
Geologic al Servo t*s found a
i(K) year-old basket left in the
area of the Tillamook Indians,
whe i, pros tded further proof
of earthquakes m Oregon's his
tory
Het ause the basket was
found submerged in so much
water, it suggested an earth
quake had tx < aired. The sea
level has been rising for thou
sands of \e.trs now. ami dis

lesel to rise abruptly
Although it s obviously not
in [xirfet t condition, the lias
ket is still a significant find
“Things like this are just
never preserved at sites in
western Oregon.'* said Thomas
Connolly, chief archaeologist

Natural History
The basket was able to be
preserved beuuise it was sub
merged below the water line
“It adds to the body of evi

Geologists think this basket Is
proof of a large earthquake
ing because it inserts the
human element {into the
earthquakes!." Connolly said.
After the conifer-made bas
ket was found. Connolly and
Rit k Minor, an archaeologist,
examined it.
"The weaving tor hnique
and materials wen* very typ
ical of a basket from tin* area
{around Nehalem Bay)," ('.on
noily said.
"Basketry is a pretty sensi
tise i ulturnl artifact." he wnd.
The basket's find by geolo
gists was part of the work the
U S Geological Services is
doing along the coast.
They have been finding
repetitive layers of [ieat marsh,
mud and sand in their earth
samples This pattern,
explained Connolly, shows
how earthquakes have creat
ed new layers of sand from the
o< ean
The basket is currently on
display at the University's
