We promised to adver tise with your quality journal of objcx tivity since that usually gets the advertiser on the front c over (witness the Due k Slop Coffee Shop in the Bookstore and Hit* \ I Street Market to name but tw I However, 1 thought we had agreed upon a small advertise ment in the bm k You told us thc> editorial page was up for grabs for the measly pric e of $300, hut I believe we explained that was ethically unsound and fiscally unattainable Thank you anvway, hut we'll stick to doing business with journals like the Oregon Commentator and the Student Insurgent who don't sell their beliefs to the highest bidder J. The Emerald endorse ment for ASUO Executive will appear Monday Details While it pains mi* to dignifv yesterday's editorial with u response, I believe it is necessary to clear up a few insignificant details. • The editors of sour paper must have tittle experience with the actual layout of the public a tion. If they had this rudimentary knowledge, they would know that advertisements and copy are not laid out by the same people. In fact, advertisements are laid down first - - I lielieve your paper calls them run sheets, perhaps the editorial board has seen one Copy is then placed around the advertisements. Therefore, the “ominous" fact that a paid polit ical advertisement appeared on the same page as a piece by one of t he candidates is a coincidence only related to the sire of the advertisement and the length of the article (Commentator, April 10, |>age 11). The ad in question was rather ineffective, considering it failed to mention the names of Good and Schoenborn, or anything more significant than their revolting nature and their pres ence m a dwelling All candidates are welcome to approat h the Commentator for similar political advertisements (although I would recommend employing a better ad designer), We offer lower rates for political candidates because we value the sanctity of political speech over all other forms. I discussed this policy with managing editor Dave Thom on Monday, but he failed to inform Emerald readers of the a< i esst bility other candidates have to the Commentator in his editori al • While the Reverend Schoon tx>ni and the good Dr <axel were mentioned in What Rules .% What Drools." under the head line of "Drunken Kxploits," it was only an off-handed mention of their t andidm v N'o endorsement was even suggested (page 5) Incidentally. Emerald enter tainment editor Trivia Noel shared the same spotlight when we off-handedly i ritlqued her subject matter of television shows she likes and w hat she has in her cupboards. Mary Fisher is the founder of Family AIDS Network, Inc., a national nonprofit organization that heightens community and national awareness in the tight against HIV AIDS. Perhaps best known for her impassioned speech at the 1992 Republican National Convention, Ms, Fisher is committed to sharing her personal experience as an individual and mother with HIV to further the understanding of the impact this disease is having on families.
