Man h 31) but doesn't seem to understand it The freedom* of speech and reli gion are only permissible to the point where they don't infringe on the rights of others While schooling (which is only marginally under the discretion of the parents), clothing, diet and dis< ipline (as long ns it is not abuse) may be up to the parents, the child's life is not one of their lilierties Once a child is born, it is protected by the Constitution, which includes the right to life, liberly and the pursuit of happi ness. Without life, the rest is com mentary A* to the assertion that Oregon courts have imposed Judeo-Chris tian values upon the Hays, they were Christians and 1 don't see how the courts have pressed any religions beliefs upon the Hays. The courts here have made the Hays responsible for their dei i sion to ignore the advice of experts that could have saved the life of their child. A child is not chattel that is owned by the parent A parent has a responsibility to act in the liest interest of the child. This is illustrated by the laws against child abuse, child labor and laws making education mandatory. While I respect the rights of the parents to religious freedom and expression, their decision was child abuse in the form of neglect. A 7-year-old child doesn't have the maturity to choose a lifestyle, he it religious or otherwise I'm willing to say that a 7-year -old child doesn't have many religious views. This child didn’t choose his religion; that's not a particu lar problem until we talk about the right every person, even tod dlers, have under our Constitu tion: the right to live. The welfare of children should not he sus ceptible to the religious beliefs of the parent and legally this is fact. This has nothing to do with Judeo-Chris!ian values. This has to do with basic human values. These people were exercising a constitutional right, but they took it to a point whore thev wore infringing on the rights of anotfi at person protected hv the (ion stitution — their son Heather Wade Physics Join YWCA As we begin a new term, I'd like to ask the University com munity for support During Women's History Month. I mar veled at the irony of tfie situation of the 'l WCA of Eugene As one of the oldest student groups on campus, we once enjoyed a mem bership of thousands Currently we are wondering about our future. Like most student groups oper ated by students with inciden tnl fees, our membership fluctu ates yearly with a high turnover of directors and we need your help Our goals to eliminate racism and sexism are (ertainlv crucial to our community and our national and local resources are amazing We are try ing to make the l hiiversity ummumiit aware that we need your support os active members The opportunities to tie involved are endless, both with in our group and in others We am currently hiring a dirts tor and an assistant director for next year and we am also looking for vol unteers willing to make a com mitment this term and. we hope, through next year In particular, we need students to help with fund raising, public relations, budgeting, events planning and management. The OSPfRG chapter ut the Univer sity is working to collect 5.0(H) signatures Among the other accomplish ments by OSPIRG w ere t Working for the passage of Sit m. the ()regon Rot vt ling Act. in 1991 the toughest recycling law in the nation 2 Working to expand the .Superfund law in the late 1980s to reduce the amount of toxii chemicals released into the envi ronment I Working for the passage of Measure 9. the utmpmgn finaiu e reform initiative, in the last gen end election The passage of Mea sure 9 limits the amount of mun ev individuals and political action committees can contribute to campaigns C.ummlly, OSPIRG is working against passage of SH 279, whic h would eliminate the use of ret v cl oil plastic in food packages OSPIRG is also working lo expand the current buttle hill passed in 1971 to include drink containers not currently covered under the hill to reduce litter and provide more of an tin unlive to rec yc:le.
