Tourism is a large part of the economy and depends on Ore gon's natural beauty and sport fishing, krishnamurthy said. Three salmon species on the Snake river are on the endan gered specie* list and Oregon's tourism will suffer as a result, she said Krishnamurthy was Oregon's sole representative in the Earth Day Campus Summit, part of the Earth Day lfi‘15 free the Plan et" campaign The? campaign's three objec tives are to activate grassroots politics, stop corporate "green washing" and (miss environmen tal legislation in Congress, Knshnaniurthy said April 22 is Earth Day's 25th anniversary, and the campaign lasts through July ■» OSPJRG has been collet ting student signa tures for the campaign, a so called "environmental petition to Newt Gingrich." OSPIRG'* "Free the Planet" coordinator, said the purpose of the petition is "to tell \<-vs t that this election whs not a mandate against the environ ment," Novak said OSPIRG students have (.oiler ted 3.000 signatures from University students and hope to have 7,000 by April "Earth Day is the perfect vehi cle for change," Krishnamurthy said. Earth Day was organized bv students in the tfifiOs as a day when Congress shut down and < 'ingression.il leaders ittended "teach-ins" in their own dis tricts She said she would like stu dents to reclaim Earth Dav.
