■ LETTERS Who to believe? The article bv Prime A I Fontana in the Knwmld of Feb H prompts me to ask the following questions When it comes to historic preservation. I confess my igno rance I know very little about this subj»* t Now let me get this straight. Interim President Frohnmayer (an attorney) and vice-president Dan Williams (.1 member of the landlord's Assn nation and a member of the Board of Directors of the largest landlord in Lane County, Sat red Heart Hospital) and Prime A f Fontana (a University student) all say that the Amazon Family Housing Props t is not worthy of historic preservation. On the other hand, the lingerie Historic Board, the Stale Historii Preser vation Office, and the National Historic Trust, people that I pre sumo have extensive knowledge of tills sublet t, say that it is I also know very little about construction and building reha bilitation The “loyvver," the "landlord" and the University student say that Amazon 1 a n’t be rehabilitated and maintained as low income student housing in a manner that is safe and cost effective But (University Direi - tor of Housing) Mike F.vster wrote u letter last y ear that states that the first engineering report the University commissioned concluded that Amazon yvas safe; the more comprehensive engineering report (F.mtex) also concluded that it was both safe and economically sound to reha bilitate Amazon, as do other art hitei (oral studies and local developers In fact, the St Vincent dePaul Society, a community leader in low-income housing develop ment, believes it can move and rehabilitate some of the units as low-income housing and a pri vate property management com panv believes that it t an mo vi and rehabilitate the building to rvnt at market rati*'.
