Gtover featured a short film by director Trent Hams called 'The Okly Kid * He starred m the film, which was based on a true story 12 yea's ago. and claimed it to be one ot his favorites Among other things, the turn portrayed small town hte and Glove? in drag as Otivia Newt on-John This alone was worth the price ot admission Contusion and laughter is all that remains of Gover's heart attack-styte slide show Glover 's presentation left the audience with a boiling performance that was overwhelming memorable and nearly inexplicable HOOPS < .tmttnutd jnm Page 7 a bio to make thorn on a court A prime example of this money mentality conies during a sequence involving a basketball camp the camps a'e ultimately seen as college recruiting meat markets mat gauge a player on the strength of his jump shot rathe* tfian the quality of his character Although there is a tangible excitement over tho competition within the camp, it is consistently overshadowed by the specter of greed Iroruc ally, though, the selective injustice between Agee and Gates at St Joe s doesn't play out as expected The human spirit becomes Stronger in trie lace ol adversity, and as a result it otters plenty ol surprises Many of these surprises .ne documented by me tin w.th stunning poignancy Although Hoop Drooms dwells on basfcel&ati as its theme, the really compelling moments often come oft the court A devastating knee injury t tie revelation ot fathering a child A tatfier selling drugs A determined mother using education to tight her way ott welfare and collapsing in tears upon receiving certification as a visiting nurse f he battles ot passing she ALT. the standardized e*am that is the gatekeeper ot big-time NCAA athletes The electricity bomg cut oM An 18th birthday party at which the celebrant's mother notes with gratitude that her son lived to this age when so many m the projects have not T hese are moments gleaned from more than ?so hours ot material shot by filmmakers Steve James Frederick Mar* and Peter Gilbert t ventuahy edited down to almost three hours Hoop Dreams has a rhythm that keeps you fuity engaged and almost unaware ot the pas : ;■ ' ' ■ <• Instead ot following in the footsteps ot recent basketbaii-retatad films.
