EDITORIAL Let us give thanks Woil. Thanksgiving is upon us one® again. Without getting into all of the political implications this day has. wb at the Emerald would Hk«r* to give thanks for many things this season. First we would like to thank the Oregon Ducks for a dream season. You have given us a reason to hope and to believe. At the beginning of the season the national media discounted Oregon, they even went so far as to rank the Ducks dead last We thank you once again. w« know you could do it. Good luck at the Rose Bowl. Second we would like to thank the University admin istration for moving the beginning of the term back to (an. 3 to accommodate the Ducks Rose Bowl berth We thought it would never happen. We figured nothing shott at Armageddon would mtks administrators give us a day off. Third we would like to thank the voters for turning down Measures 15 and 13. With all kinds of crazy laws passing in other states its good to know that the hearts and heads of Oregonians are in the right plat®. Those are the things we are most thankful for. Now here's n list of others that did not make our top 3: • For our ad and production staffs and for Kathy and both of our Judys • Our families are happy and healthy • We get three weeks off for winter break • We are thankful that the EMU stopped turning the heal off on weekends • We got new computer equipment • People are still writing letters to the editor • Ed Carson is LA's problem now • School is out for Turkey Day • The University will map marly benefits from being in the Rose Howl • Ace Frehloy played the Mill Camp • Pasadena is warmer than $h reeve port • Taco Time in the EMU • The I EC has been abolished • We beat OSU in the Civil War • Jimmy Page and Robert Plant have reunited • Our mascot is not a beaver • Vis Comm, is almost over • Memories For tho sake of balance here is a list of things that we are not so thankful for: • Taco Time in the EMU • People are still writing letters to the editor • We have to go to school in December and Lewis and Clark doesn't • Newt Gingrich. Jesse Helms and Bob Packwood • That guy on ESPN who said that Penn State is "playing a nobody” in the Rose Bowl So folks there you have it. The good, the bad and the ugly. Basically we are all just thankful to be here at the Uni versity in 1994 basking in the glow of a great football season and looking forward to a great basketball season (from the women anyway). Burroughs School Prayer Brian Wont at k's Nov 18 col umn (Majority favors sc hoot prayer) is absolutely ludic rous To suggest that Bill Clinton is some sort of radic al who has "proposed a government takeover of one-seventh of the « onomy" is ridiculous And to say that radii al right-wingers like Newt Gingrich are "on tar get" is no less than atrocious When are people going to realize that the inc rease in vio lence and the breakdown of families in this c ountrv have lit tle if anything to do with the fact that we don't have prayer in our public school? Conservatives try to make this connection in order to avoid the real issues The fac t of the matter is that it is conservatives like Gingrich who are to be blamed for the moral breakdown in this nation. By creating the polit ies that have It'd to the widening of the gap between ric h and poor, con servative* have promoted the destructive idea that enriching yourself at the expensive of oth ers is perfectly acceptable. In a sex iety where this wealth iest and most influential indi viduals show nothing hut con tempt for the more downtrodden elements, a moral breakdown is hound to occur. Tlie elites elements of our society have taught us by example to think only of ourselves, not (if our six iety as a whole Newt Gingrich will continue to rant and rave about the moral breakdow n that the "countercul ture" has perpetrated upon this nation He will also continue to point to the poor mother on wel fare as everything that is wrong with this country But the fact of the matter is that it is people like Newt Gingrich and his wealthy constituents that are most responsible for the greed and selfishness that have led to a breakdown of this nation's moral core Justin Descour History Extreme action !'m writing concerning the Nov 1H ODE opinion column by Anne Moser Korn fold. Two points might add to the bal anced analysis invoked—if not expressed—by his invective. First, we might entertain the notion that racism may grow from the effect of policy as well as the intention. Proposition 187 hurts many people one might summarize as different from the population at large in California A separation of peoples charac terized by ethinicity, language and culture, and by epidermal hue. has become categorized a* racism Prop 187 may therefore lie termed "racist ” Second, we must ask if a com petitive m onomy is as necessary us we've lawn led to believe. If it is not. then perhaps more folks could !>e admitted in behind the pale of humanity US citizens currently sequester for them selves In addition, and despite Mr Doerry's advice to overlook the past, we should not forget history The US government and US corporations, backed by the US Army , wrested a great deal of land and treasure from the peo ples now south of an arbitrary iwrder. Some may vilify the con cept of justice as just another obsession of the self-annointed politically correct, hut then alt law becomes force. No ethics.
