■ SPORTS EXTRA FOOTBALL Tomey respects resurgent Ducks Trevor Kearney Or&QQfl Ot* *y t When Arizona head coach Dick Tomoy looked at last weeks tajM's of the Oregon Out k football Kamo, he saw a little more than n strong defense dominating n nationally ranked team He saw a flashback to 1M2. According to Tomoy, the DihJcs resemble the l'i<t2 Wildcats "I see them very much like we were m 1992,” Tomey said. 'They have a very young offen sive line Their offensive line is hanging in there and doing a nice job for them and giving them a chance to win And their defense is playing great football." But oven more importantly than the resemblance, when Tomoy watches the Ducks plav, he sees a team on the verge of i aptoring the Pocifu 10 i older ence title "Oregon i Ionr 1 y. if they win this football game, w ill Im in the driver's seat." Tomey said T,verybodv else loses control of the rai i*. and Oregon has all the control We would all like to be able to control our own destiny "They make more plays than anyone we’ve played. They do the little tilings (They have) a great kn king game, the best return guvs we have played against and the best secondary we've played against Tomey. who lias coached Ari zona Sim e 1 lIH7. has a 4 V (14 rei ord with the Wildcats I.ast year, he guided Arizona to a first-pier« tie in the Pnc-10, and then on to a .Mi ll thrashing of Miami in the Fiesta Howl This year Arizona is 4-0 in the con ference, 0-1 overall, and is ranked 11th in tin* nation Hut with bowl appearances in 19H9. 1090 and 1992. coupled with the strong victory over Washington last week, the Ducks have gained Turney's res[nn I "Oregon has been one of the most sm < essfnl teams in the con ference the last six years," Tomey said. "They’ve played a lot of out standing footlsill When they had to make <t drive (against Wash ington). they did " As far as experience goes, Tomey believes that there nr** more important keys to a footlvnli leant than just veteran play In Tomey'* eyes, Oregon has the attitude to win Saturday 's game "Certainly their offensive line hasn't Stern dominant, but they ve done a great job for an inexperi enced group You don't have to have a veteran at every position." Tomey said, adding that he was impressed yvith the way the Ducks have fought off early sea son woes 'The fans were down on them, (hut) the team kept believing in themselves They fought hack and continued to win As the season progressed, they've gotten .better and hotter "They're playing with a tremendous belief that they are going to yvin, which is the most important thing that you can have. That is probably more !in|>ortant than talent The tough Ml gity ’o play is ihe gu\ that is playing and believes he ruin yvin it and that's ()regon." Some of the Wildcats' less experienced players have stepped up a level and become key contributors to the team's SUi.l ess We've got some mexperi mm od players, that am play Ing In some t asj-s. Iietter than our e\|x noticed players," Tomey said Despite Oregon's defense mu lling rampant on its opponents, tomey said the Wildcats are going to do nothing different against the Ducks than they would against any other team "hvervhodv is trying to win and we re trying to do what we have to do to win." Tomey said You're just trying to win a game You don't think you have to sc ore this many points, you just try to have more than they do at the end T think (Saturday s game) is exciting for both teams. ' Tomey salii "It is going to take a real good, strong football game to yvin." I ailj^atr I'artlrs • Pl//a • Salad Bar • Buflrf • C hit krn • Delivery ) ) Next to Campus/ Downtown 730 E.
