Carlesimo may get Blazer blood flowing First O | . now P | Whatev i*r happened to normal guv names like Frank, Hob or Du k I don't know about anyone else, but I always thought that l’|s were a cute abbreviation that my mom invented for my Spider Man pajamas I guess it's the 1990a and a man can be named P.J. if he so pleases This two letter man that 1 s|*<nk of is P J. Carlesimo. the new heed coach of the Portland Trail Blaz ers (lot me tell you. it's quite refreshing to write something good about the Blazers ns it has been a while). I say good, because at worst, this move is a risk that at least gets the Blazer-faithful blood flowing again At liest, it could finally bring an NBA champi onship bark to Portland (>h sure. (larlealmo < ould fail horribly. After all. he has no pre vious NBA experience other than being an assistant com h for the Olvmpir "Dream Team" in 1992. and his winning percentage in college is just slightly over 500 Me did. however, take his Seton Hall Pirates to the NCAA tour nament six of the last seven veers including the championship game in 1989 where they barely lost to Michigan in overtime While it is impossible to pre dict just how Carlesimo will do oil the NBA level, smart people will fart oil his success Carlesimo is generally consid ered a likable guy off the i ourt and an intense competitor on the < ourt He also brings some much needed charisma to the Blazers, something definitely larking under Kit k Adelmnn (lux k. even Charles Barklev likes Carlesimo). I here is also a lot to be said for a fresh fat e, especially in the NBA The Blazers could have adopted the dreaded Su. rumen to kings l.os Angeles Clippers philosophy and hired some washed up. rehashed NBA rein - oh, 1 mean coach — (Gene Chris Mt rz Shoe and Dick Motta) Instead the Blazers went out and pursued top notch college coaches Owner Paul Allen made it no secret that he was willing to pay top dollar to the right man. Sure, it would have been nice to have landed a Mike Krzvzews ki or John Thompson, but if there is one thing Mick Jngger and I have learned in this life, it is that you can't always get what you want. Carlesimo's biggest challenge will be adapting his intense!, dis ciplinary style to the ice show attending, practice-skipping Maz ers. a team more famous for their off-1 lie-court entertainment options than their spirited play on the court. Critic s have already jumped out and scoffed at the choic e of Carlesimo to head the Blazers, saying that there is no way his tough statu e will float in this, the modem age of multi-million dol lar professional basketball play - ers. May tie it is impossible to trans form a bunch of selfish individ uals into a cohesive, winning bas ketlwll team, but I’ll give old P.J. a little credit He knows the obstn i les that stand in front of him. So here they ore. the top It) things that Blazer fans can expect P I Carlesimo to do to instill a new feeling of youthful exuber ance and team unity into the Blazers. Drum roll please. 10.
