The Integrated !.i( ensure pro
gram is the section intended for
students who went to receive a
teaching license
Previously. Green said, earn
ing a teacher's license was much
like a train trip, where each sta
tion or stop represented a differ
ent certification.
"This is a new system, and
we re starting at the tmgmning
by saying the train-track model
is no longer appropriate/' Green
said
Students would emerge from
the program with a Basil Teach
ing License with three endorse
ments: a Handicapped Learner
endorsement, which allows
them to work with mild to
severely handicapped children
from kindergarten through
twelfth grade, an endorsement
in elementary education, and on
additional endorsement of the
student's choice, either Reading/
Literacy, Severely Handicapped
l-earner or Early Childhood.
The benefit of working toward
this combination of teaching
license and endorsements,
rather than first earning a
li< ense and then subsequent
endorsements is one of efficien
cy and greater knowledge. Green
said.
"You're not just a handi
i apjHui teacher." she said, "but
you're an elementary teacher
too."
These now programs originat
ed for two reasons, said Deborah
Simmons, Assistant Dean of the
College of Education
"Wo needed to become more
active in the University through
undergraduate work." she said
"As a college, we needed to
lex ome more visible "
Simmons also said the college
“saw n real need for the kinds of
professions that could lie pre
pared for in the kinds of special
izations the college had
expertise in."
Both Simmons and Green
credited the education faculty
for their commitment in devel
oping the program
"1 have never worked in a
place where the faculty willing
ly gave up time and research to
attend meeting after meeting
with such good spirits." Green
said.
Simmons said faculty mem
bers had worked on weekends
and evenings and in some cases,
hod left national meetings early
to attend meetings on the new
programs
If the new education program
is approved. Simmons said
interested students should take
Educ 111 ami Educ 114 as soon
as possible, preferably during
the freshman year
These two courses are part of
four prerequisite classes that
need to be taken before formal
admission to the program is
granted. The remaining two
classes should he taken during
the sophomore year, in time for
the winter term application
deadline.
If accepted, students would
begin those new programs fall
term of their junior year.

450-student Pleasant Hill High

cut in athletics funds in the
1904-95 biennium, he said
