Eugene gets ‘Back to Bach’

Eugene? Boring? In the sum
mer7 Not with a cultural whirl
wind like the Oivgon Bar h Fes
tival The events that comprise
this 25th Anniversary festival
aren't |ust a bunch of wanna-lx*
sex ialites who crowd into a
stuffy concert hall to snore
away to a high class lullahv It s
user-friendly fun, with some
thing for everyone Even some
ftvt-stuff.
There will la- some world-re
nowned music iiius and com
posers grat ing our fair green
city from June 24 to July 9. The
theme of this year's lest is Spir
duality in Mush The headline
even! is the world premiere of
Ijfnny, composed by Arvo Part,
an Kstomnn-hom contemporary
composer who is such hot stuff
that many bigwigs in the clas
sical musir scene didn't ever
think he would do a com
missioned work in this coun
try But here he Is in f.ugene
Another respected classical
music heavy, the University
mush school's own Helmut
Killing, who is also the festi
val's art director, will conduct
the orr hestral-chornl piece.
Other big names include Kei
th Jarret, keyboardist; the Bel
la l.ewitskv Dan. e Company;
and guitarist Jose Maria Gal
lardo del Rey.
For those who shy away from
big concert hall extravaganzas,
such as Vespers by Montovor
di. Hitch's Mass in II Minor, and
the Hrqiwim by Verdi, there's
a number of smaller concerts,
Milo performances, kids events
and dance performances. For
the intellectual music funs,
there's a number of annual
event programs that include
lectures, discussions, and
workshops. Check out the
schedule and go to town. You
shall feel so enlightened, so
cultured, so festive • and posi
