EDITORIAL Good for Brand; bad for University Just when the going got tough. University President Myles Brand got going — to Indiana University. Strick en by Ballot Measure 5. just two years after taking the University's helm. Brand sailed the ship quite well. But he s decided to leave at a time that Is unappealing for many new prospects to fulfill his position. How appealing would the position of University president ho in the midst of what lays ahead? Enter ing the third biennium of Measure 5, the financial outlook is bleak. Potential impact includes managing a budget for 1995-1997 that’s an estimated $100 $120 million less than the The University is at a very vulnerable point, as is education in Oregon. It is a crucial time for positive leadership inu.j lays level ana »4bu-$MX> minion tioiow tun 1990 1991 level for slate General Fund support. Certainly stu dents will be forced to look elsewhere than Oregon for higher education with the proposed cuts resulting in lower enrollment, which just presents another hurdle to jump. The University is at a vulnerable point, as is educa lion in Oregon. It is a crucial time for positive leader* ship. However, recruiting a president willing to take the position with full knowledge of what ails the Universi ty. most likely won't provide the most desirable candi date. Sure the area is nice, tho campus is nice, the fac ulty is great and Oregon is appealing, hut hlg'uor education in Oregon isn't. Brand's resignation isn't the only one. Provost Nor man Wells is retiring, and a search, already underway, will bo suspended probably until a new president is hired. This will leave an acting president and an acting provost temporarily filling the positions. Simultaneous ly hiring a provost, the second highest administrative position under president, and hiring a president could make the change in leadership a little alarming. Certainly Brand’s decision, in self interest, is a good one. His new position comes after a life-long quest for something of its kind. His time at tho University has been equated to a stepping stone to something bigger and better, merely using the University as training wheels for a position like the one at Indiana Universi ty. Unfortunately for him. Measure 5 came like a plague. Squandering over money, he was in a position that did not allow for changes, making it difficult for him to show his truo capacity. Brand must ho commended for keeping the Universi ty solvent up to this point. Leaving at this time will, obviously, benofit him, hut the University's future is repressed by a president who will proceed Brand at a timo when interest in the Oregon's education is not pos itive. Joey has also shown his c apabilities to keep students No 1 with his work on the IPG and the KMU Hoard I have had the opportuni ty to work first hand with both Shannon and Joey and have con fidence that they will represent the student body candidly Working with Shannon and Joey. 1 know they are responsible people committed to a common goal of making this University a better institution. They do not quit mid-stream when the times may be stressful. They tend to dive head-on into the issue to resolve it For the good of the students and for the good of this Univer sity. I stand behind the leader ship and the possibilities the next year has to hold with Shannon Varney and Joey Lyons as our next ASUO president and vice president. Margaret Chatfteld Biology Ernie’s informed Todd Barnhart states he is the voice of low-income families and is involved with the “Amazon Review," although he did not define what he meant. What he doesn't say is that he submitted a statement to the City Council in opposition to historical designa tion of Amazon When West moreland residents were asked to voice their support for Ama zon. he unprofessional!)' stomped out of a Westmoreland tenants' meeting so their council wouldn't have a quorum to vote on it; he believed it would pass. I wish him the best, but the real candidate informed on Amazon is Ernie Woodland He lins attended co-op and Amazon com inunity tenant meetings He is a professional, caring, conscien tious candidate and he has a strong running mate, Johanna Kinberg, who, like Ernie, is edu i aterl on the issues and is not afraid to confront them. Suzanne O'Shea Physics No fear I'm tired of hearing women say they live their life in fear of being attacked. Fear will never help you. Even if you were never attacked your life will lie a waste because you live in fear If a man wants to assault you he will smell your fear like a dog and it will strengthen him. Homett Eugene Aloha Leslie It was only a week or two ago when my friend told me she would lx; running for ASUO pres ident Before then I was expect ing her to leave me here strand ed at the University However, she has decided to stay, and I believe it will In* for the better of all of the student body Being from Hawaii and coming to Oregon. 1 was not prepared for the climate or distance change. My friend made up for this. She has made my stay here, and it is not so far away from the hearts of the people back home to me. Many people in Hawaii call this Aloha or Hawaiian Spirit. It is a foaling of love and kindness for all things. It is a spirit of giving and unselfish generosity. It is friends like her who watc h over me when I arn homesick and make me feel like home here in Oregon. If you want someone who is here for you. if you want some one with heart — vote for my friend Leslie Warren. Kevin Chang Psychology Same old sheet Bruce Tucker believes the par allel 1 drew between the shoot ing at Temple Beth in Israel (skinheads have been arrested and charged) and the Oregon Citizens Alliance’s ongoing political violence attacking homosexual Oregon citizens was an inappropriate parallel (Roister-Guard, April B). Perhaps Tucker and other skeptics might review new footage by local TV stations depicting uniformed skinheads marching on Albany City Hall prior to the Novuinlier 1M2 vote on OCA-sponsored anti-gay Bal lot Measure 9. Skinhead signs proclaimed "The OCA is right... hut not Pro-White." Clearly even the skinheads recognize some common beliefs they share with the OCA When skinheads witness the (XiA's organized political attack on a minority, it sends them a message that it's open season on minorities, bo it Jews, blacks or homosexuals. Skinheads act on this societal green light much like Hitler’s hrownshirts enacted violence in the years leading to the Holocaust. Of course it wasn’t the OCA’s actual hands on the triggers pumping bullets into the temple Hiit it is their hands behind polit ical violence being spread throughout Oregon, political vio lence that encourages discrimi nation and incites violence. Doc umented hate crimes against homosexuals virtually soared in the months prior to the OCA’s anti-gay Measure 9 election. It was no coincidence. IXIA leaders are the suits behind the jackboots.
