Rookies shine in Ducks’ 83-72 win over Bamberg

The Oregon men's basketball
finally unveiled its new mem
bers Tuesday against Bamberg
Club at Mi Arthur Court, and
they played a large role in lead
ing the Ducks to an H:t-72 win
The game was a non-counting
contest against the team from
Germany, but it was n chance for
Oregon head coac h Jerry Green
to get a look at just how much
progress his team made in three
short weeks of practice Sis new
faces graced the floor for the
Ducks, and a few shined in their
debut.
• Freshman forward Henry
Madden exploded to start the sis
ond half, scoring 11 straight
points and blocking a shot in two
minutes to give Oregon its biggest
lend of the game at Mad
den crashed the boards all night
and ended with a game-high 21
points and nine rebounds.
• Freshman Kenya Wilkins
showed skills at the point guard
position that have been sorely
lacking at Oregon for the past
two years Wilkins scored only
two points, but dished out eight
assists, had four steals and
turned the ball over only onm in
22 minutes of play,
Wilkins said that despite bis
one of six shooting performance,
he was jusl happy to get a
chance to play a real game
"It was a lot of fun out there."
he said "I struggled from the
field, but my role is to set up
other people to st ore. Scoring
doesn't matter to me."
• Junior college transfer Dar
ryl Parker hit four of seven
shots, had four rebounds and
finished with 11 points
Of the veterans, junior Orlan
do Williams looked the best.
Williams hit two three-pointers
early in the game and hit four of
sis from three-point range for
the night, finishing with IB
points in only 19 minutes
The Ducks jumped out early
on the bulky Hamburg Club,
grabbing a 7-2 lead Hamburg
pulled back within one at 21-20
with nine minutes left in the
first half, but Oregon rebuilt its
lead thanks to junior Jordy
Lyden’s five straight free throws
Freshman guard Brion Smith
hit a three-pointer late in the
half to give the Ducks a 41-28
halftime lead
Oregon i nine out in the sec
mid hall with an aggressive full
court defense the resulted in
three easy lay-ups for Madden to
give the Ducks a r)2-.t0 lead.
Hamburg made a run at the
end, hut Oregon held on for the
win.

guard Quincy Brewer will miss the
upcoming season after reinjuring Ins right
knee, coach Bill Friedor said Tuesday.
Brewer, a (ifoot-5 redshirt freshman
from Riverside. (ialif., fractured his right
kneecap during a scrimmage Sunday night.
Brewer, who sat out Inst season after
injuring his patella, had scored 11 points
and added three assists during the Sun
Devils' exhibition victory Friday over
Southeast Melbourne
Krieder said Brewer will undergo knew
surgery within a week

TUCSON. Ariz. (AP) — Arizona signed
guard Kevin Kafon of Seagoville. Texas,
Monday, the third signing during the ear
ly signing period, which Iwgan Wednes

The B-l Kafon has averaged nearly 32
points a game at Seagoville High School
but had been recruited by Michigan.

Corkrum, a 220-pound former all-state

"I probably wouldn't start, at least at
the beginning, and I'd like to have more
of a chance to do that next year."
Corkrum said Monday night He added
that he would use the year to gain weight
and mature as a player.
Corkrum is one of five post players in
the Cougars' three-guard offense and has
not practiced much with the first unit this
fall.
A three-year letter winner, Corkrum
has been a part-time starter since his
freshman year, averaging 5.3 points and
3,8 rebounds a game.
