    New golf head coach
already part of family
By Andrew Scales

Lara Mack was named the new
head coach of the women s golf
team during the off-season
The script, however, for the
1993 women's golf team reads
more like a family tree than a ros
ter of coaches and players. That 's
because Mack, assuming her first
ever coaching position, replaces
her sister. Renee Baumgartner
"Renee really enjoyed her job."
said Mack."and I now under
stand why. I am lucky to have
this opportunity."
Baumgartner headed to USC to
take over the Trojans' women's
golf team.
In addition to replacing one sis
ter, Mack will coach Cappy
Mack, another sister
"I'm very excited about the
opportunity to coach Cappv."
said Mack. "1 might expect more
from her because she is my sis
ter, but I try to bo her coach on
the golf course and her sister off
the links."
Mack, a member of the Arizona
golf team from 19H4-8H. brings
All-America credentials and lofty
goals.
As an All-American at Arizona,
Mack led the Wildcats to two
NCAA tournament bids. As a
coach, she hopes to lead her team
to the top of the Pacific-10 Con
ference.
"We finished fourth in the Pac
10 last year," said Mack. "This
year we want to finish in the top
three. And we would like to
improve on lost year’s NCAA per
formance by finishing in the top
10."
Last year, the Ducks finished
17th in the national tournament,
which will lie played at the Ore
gon Golf Club this year.
The Ducks took the first step
toward improvement when they
finished eighth at the Oregon Fall
Preview last week, a tournament
that brings the nation's top teams
together at that year's site for the
NCAA Championships. Oregon

USC team finished fifth.
Cappy Mack led the Ducks

ually Wendy Ward of Arizona
State won the tournament at 150
Lara Mack continues to play
competitively as an amatuer in
the Oregon area. Last year she
made it to the finals of the Ore
gon Amatuer Championship.
Ironically, she had to defeat Duck
golfer Becca Giersdorf in the
semifinals, only to fall to Karly
Mills, another team member, in
the finals. It was a classic case of
the student teaching the teacher.
Despite her rookie status, the
optimistic Mack brings a positive
coaching attitude to the team and
the playing experience needed to
iron out the team's gulfing wrin
kles.
The [Kicks were in fourth place
at the Dick McGuire Invitation
al at Albuquerque. N.M.. after the

Regali averaged 7H.52 last

Seattle.
"Wo have some hoys who
have played together." Nosier
said "Last year Randy, F’aul
and Chris played in about
two-thirds of our tourna
ments. and Ted played in all
of them. 1 don't know what
has been wrong this year, but
we definitely shouldn't have
jitters."
Nosier said the loss of
Lyons and Martin may be
hurting the team psychologi
cally as well as on the course
"In their minds they’re
used to thinking we've got |eff
and Cam to set the pace,"
Nosier said "And as long as
each player does OK. the team
will Ik; all right Now we need
every player to step forward
and help the team.”
Senior Jeremy Forster is
Oregon's only other player
entering this season who has
played in more than one divi

Forster, who transferred from
Columbia Basin Junior Col

the Ducks so far this year.
Scheidt finished second on
the team at the Husky Invita

round score for the Ducks this
year.
Senior Alex Nakaiima only
played in the Ducks’ home
tournament a year ago. hut he
won the team's first qualifier
and competed in the Husky
Invitational. Sophomore Bri

weekend when he opened
with a 2-over-par 7S. before
finishing at 235.
Redshirt freshmen Joel
Stock and Ronn Miyushiro,
and sophomore John Metier
all return this year after
spending Inst season practic
ing with the team.
Sophomores Jamie Hanson
and Todd Couch have been
added to the team this year,

other tournaments in October
and November before taking
a four-month break from tour
naments in the winter.
"We will change our lineup
a lot this fall to find the five
players we want to go with in
the spring." Noslor said. "We
proved last year that you can
make it into the postseason
despite havings mediocre fall
