the plavers to sign letters of in

Heavers coach Jerry Pettibone
is a Texan, and he relied heavi
ly on his connei (ions there in
this year's recruiting efforts,
- "We've got a lot of ties in
Texas." Pettibone said "I re
cruited down then* for 20 years
when I was at Oklahoma. Ne

He said Texas was ripe for

Melde was a prep teammate
of another top Oregon State re
cruit, quarterback Adrian
Woodson, who led Temple
High School to the Texas state
5A championship last season
and was a first-team all-state se
lection by the Texas Sports
Writers Association.
As a senior, he rushed for
697 yards and averaged fi t
yards per carry and completed

yards and 13 touchdowns.

Pettibone noted that Newport
and Temple were ranked 12th
and 19th, respectively, among
the nation's prep football teams
by USA Today.
