Brand acknowledges staff cuts

The University is planning
for a 5 percent cut in adminis
trative. support and service
areas, according to a letter sent
to all faculty and staff lust
week
Recognizing the frustration of
many employees faring possi
ble termination when the Ore
gon Legislature's budget for the
19U3 »5 biennium muteriall/es.

the University's preparation
during the interim period
Brand said cuts will not he
made until they are known to
he necessary, and cuts that are
identified will bn directed to
areas that can he rebuilt quick
ly if replacement revenue is
t reeled in the future
Academic programs are diffi
cult to rebuild once they are
eliminated, Brand said, so cuts

The level of cuts is uncertain,
the letter states, but the lies!
case scenario appears to be a 5
percent reduction in state funds
and the worst case a 15 percent
reduction Planning will there
fore specify a 5 percent reduc
tion now and an additional 10
percent listed In order of priori
ty.
"How far down that list we
will need to go, and at what
rate, will liecome known as the
political process unfolds this
coming spring and fall,” Brand
said, referring to the forthcom
ing developments from the Leg
islature

The suggestions for the 5 por
tent cut will be condensed into
a final plan by Feb. 15. and pri
orities for any more cuts will be
refined by late spring. Brand
said lie will try to leave most
changes to each department
"We're trying to make the de
cisions as local as possible."
Brand said.
The budget cuts ure part ol
the University's efforts to work
with the projected SI.2 billion
shortfall in the state's general
fund for the 1993-95 biennium
Modified property tax rates
from 1990's Ballot Measure 5
reduced the amount of revenue
available to state services.

The IFC, Student Senate and ASUO Executive
agreed to wind the University administration a
letter asking that the money bo transferred to the
IFC surplus account by Doc. 17.

IFC members said they have not yet discussed
how or when it will be allocated.
"What we have here is $337,000. and we have
to come to a consensus on how and who should
deal with the money, not who gets it," said IFXI
member Lydia Lerma.
