Aanm Johnson know ull along lhal iwo years of
his life would bo spent away from the comforts of
basketball.
After finishing his career at Portland's Aloha
High School and being named the 19B9 AAA
player of the year, Johnson was ready to play Pa
clflc-10 Conference basketball for his favorite
team: Oregon
As a freshman, he played sparingly, going on
the court with the likes of Terrell Brandon, Rich
ard Lucas and Kevin Mixon That year, he aver
aged one point and 1,4 rebounds in 21 games
with the Ducks
Johnson was extremely disappointed with his
performance that season
"My first game wasn't bad," he said, "hut then
everything just kind of fell apart "
Unfortunately. The »>-foot-9. 200-pound for
ward would have to wait a couple of years to

player for Oregon
hollowing his freshman year, Jofinson had a
Iwo-year reservation in Sail Lake Oily, preventing
him from playing any sort of organized basket
ball.
The two-year break from basketball was neces
sary liecause Johnson is a devout member oi the
Mormon Church, and. as a Mormon, he was ex
pected to spend a two-year mission in Utah teach
ing, learning and experiencing the Mormon reli
gion
This season, Johnson is bm k on the Oregon
squad, with hopes of becoming a valuable asset in
Jerry Croon's up-tempo style oi play
