Ducks, Bears try to stay in bowl hunt
By Dave Charbonneau
Emetaid Sports Editor
California and Oregon were two
very different teams
California < ami- into this season
following a victory in the Citrus
Bowl ami a No 7 ranking in the sea
son ending Asset oiled Press Poll
Despite the losses of quarterback
Mike Pawlawski and head coach
Bruce Snyder, the Golden Bears
were ranked as high as IHth in the
pre-season polls
Oregon was coming off a disap
pointing 1-fl season and were
picked bv many to finish us low as
ninth in the Pacific-10 Conference
But with three games left this sea
son. the two teams have found one
thing in common; their records
The Ducks and the Bears have
identic at records — 4 -t overall and
2-1 in the Pac-10 and will meet
Saturday at Autzen Stadium in a 1
game that will be a possible first
step toward a bowl appearance for
the winner.
i
Both teams have a reasonable shot I
at finishing the season with seven 1
wins. California's next two games
are at Arizona State and at home
against Stanford. Oregon lias UCLA j
at home and Oregon State on the
road j
But a loss on Saturday will, with- t
out a doubt, end any postseason I
aspirations for the loser
“If we have any chance of to be i
involved in the postseason." Oregon t
head coach Hu h Brooks said, "we {
Pfco<o fly f'A&My
Receiver Anthony /ones will need to pick up the slack left by injured Der
rick Deadwiler on Saturday.
iced to win this one. Once you lose
ive games in this league, your howl
topes arc gone."
There's no question that this sea
on’s Pac-10 group is the toughest
rom top to bottom as it has been in
■ears. Five teams are currently
anked in the top 25, and at least
hat many could he in contention
or bowl appearances
Oregon is coming off a victory
iver one of those teams. Washing
on State, in which the Duck
lefense held the Drew Bledsoe-led
Cougars to 217 yards in total
offense. Oregon's defense has
played well for most of the season,
but because of the caliber of teams
in the Pac-10. the Ducks are ranked
eighth in defense
"We re playing as good of defense
as we've played in a long time,
maybe the best I've had since I've
been here." Brooks said "Bui even
so. we're still near the bottom in
defense."
Oregon will need to continue its
defensive performance this week
end. as I hi' Bears boast one of the
top running barks in the country in
Russell White But White ts not the
only weapon California possesses If
Oregon is able to stop White, the
Bears will not be afraid to throw the
ball with quarterback Dave Barr and
receiver Sean Dawkins
"They have an outstanding
offense," Brooks said "They can
throw the ball, and they can ob\ i
ously run the ball."
Dawkins is one of the top
receivers in the conference and is a
definite big-play athlete.
"Dawkins is the type of player
who can really hurt you," Brooks
said "We need to control Cal's run
ning game so we can put two guys
on Dawkins You have input two of
our receivers together to equal as
many pass catches as he's had "
Oregon will Ik* without the use of
its top receiver Saturday, as Derrick
Duadwder was lost for the season
with a broken collarbone
Deadwiler caught 2H passes on
Ihe season before the injury he sus
lained last week against Washington
State
"The loss of Deadwiler is nhvi
ausly a big loss for us.” Brooks said
'He is a big-play type of player
Brooks said California's defense is
imong the best the Ducks have
faced this season.
"It's going to he a very difficult
ask moving the football." he said
'I would put their defense in the
ategory with Washington and
ISC"
