Golfers finish fifth in Corvallis

Just when it appeared the Or
egon men's Rolf team members

at the Nike Northwest Classic
championship, errors on the fi
nal few holes forced the team to
settle for fifth place at the tour
nament in Corvallis Tuesday
The Ducks entered the final
round in fifth place, 15 shots
behind tournament leader Boi
se State, but could not move up
during the day Sophomore
Paul Kegali was the only Duck
who managed to shoo! under
par on the day. although throe
other players were flirting with
a sub-par round throughout the
day.
"This is very disappointing."

were playing bettor early and I
thought we were going to make

for Oregon on the final day was
the play of Kegali, a sophomore
from Kugene. who birdlod four

Kegali said "I made some early
putts and was under-pur right
away, compared to the other
two rounds when I got off to
had starts."
"Haul had it going good ear
ly." Nosier said. "He got off to
a gtxxl start and did his best to
hang on."
Senior C.arn Martin enjoyed
his best tournament of the year,
leading the Ducks with a 4
over-par 220 to finish in a tie
for seventh place. Martin shot
back-to-back 74's in the first
two rounds before finishing
with an even-par 72 on Tues
day Martin was 2-under-par on
the front nine but struggled on
the last few holes.
“t was hitting the bull bet
ter," Martin said "1 didn't putt
well. I felt pretty good putting
but I didn't make many I
played better than I did early in
the year and made better
shots."
Oregon shot a 2V)M In the
morning round on Monday but
improved on that score in the
afternoon, firing a 2SG The
Ducks shot another 2!JG on
Tuesday but remained In fifth
place, the same spot they were
in after the first and second
rounds.
Sophomore Ted Snavely led
the Ducks during the first two
rounds on Monday, shooting a
73 and 72 Suavely struggled
on the bock nine on Tuesday
before finishing with a 76. giv
ing him b 5-over-par 221 for the
tournament. Snavnly's finish
put him in 10th place, his high
est finish ever in n collegiate
tournament.
Oregon senior Jeff Lyons
struggled in Corvallis, shooting
a 74 and 73 on Monday before
finishing with a 78 on Tuesday
Lyons was under-par with two
holes remaining during the se< -
ond round, but bognyed the
17th and IRth holes to finish at
1-over-par. Lyons struggled
throughout the day on Tues
day. culminating with a dou
ble-bogey on the lHth hole
when he had to take a penalty
stroke because his hall had an
unfavorable lie.
Oregon freshman Chris
Benscl had a rough time in Cor
vallis, shooting an 18-over-pur
234, including a 78 in the final
round. Junior Randy McCrack
en competed in the tournament
as an individual and shot a 75
in each of the first two rounds
before encountering putting
troubles on Tuesday and fin
ishing with a 79.
Oregon State, the tourna
ment's host team, won the team
title after firing an even-par 288
on Tuesday to move up from
fourth place and edge out I’acif
