EDITORIAL Perot steals show from Clinton, Bush The Great Debate, Port I. turned into the Ross Perot Show Sunday night. With a barrage of witty one-liners, the Texas billionaire and occasional presidential candi date managed to avoid being skewered by either Bill Clinton or George Bush. Perot managed to keep his focus on the economy and other problems facing the country, unlike Bush and Clinton, who continued to dig at each others char acter. Bush needed to remind viewers that he "was 19 or 20, flying off an uircraft carrier.” and somehow that experience qualifies him to be president. Clinton felt it important to again compare, indirectly of course. Bush with Joseph McCarthy. Perot did get his digs in. he just did it more covert ly. When judging a person by past indiscretions, Perot said the question should be. “Did they occur when you wore a young person? , referring to Clinton s activities in the sixties, "or did they occur while you were a senior official in the federal government?" referring to Bush's involvement in Iran-Contra, funding Iraq and the savings and loan scandal. Perot struck another blow against Bush when questioned about As for Bush, Ms only hope Is to hire the writers from Dallas and Newhart to convince the American people that the last four years have been a dream. ms experience in gov ern menl. “I don't have any experience in running up u S4 trillion debt," Perot said. Well, neither does Clinton. Whose experience could he be talking about? Unfortunately for the candidates, real issues man aged to pop up from time to time. The format of the de bate did not allow any candidate to offer specific solu tions. At the next debate. Clinton needs to spell out some of his plans, just like he's been doing on the campaign trail for the last several months. Perot needs to address issues other than the economy (education, health care, etc). He should remember that he’s running for presi dent. not for chief financial officer. As for Bush, his only hope is to hire the writers from Dallas and Nvw hart to convince the American people that the last four years have been a dream. Bush's experience has been a disaster, and Iran-Contra and Iraqgate have virtually destroyed his trustworthiness. With three debates to go. Clinton needs only to not say anything stupid. Bush needs to realize that the American people have looked behind the curtain and, regardless of the wizard says, will not ignore his true character. Perot still can't win. but he will have put himself in the running for a position in the Clinton ad ministration. and if he's serious about helping the country, he'll accept it. Oregon PO BOX HS9. Charles Porter Eugene Game hogs I, like many other students in the University, urn constrained (or financial reasons to utilize shared resources — in this case the EMU computer lounge. Upon sitting down at one of the monitors today. I looked to the left and saw a note. It read: "Users who have pro jects, schooiwork. etc . have priority over game players. If you are playing a game, be pre pared to move if someone else needs the machine." 1 thought to myself, "I should say so!” Then upon further ex amination. I found permanent user files installed in the sys tem which were used exclu sively for playing games Is this appropriate use of stu dent-funded hardware? Macin tosh H's cost approximately S5,U()() These machines will eventually wear out. We should he using these computers for student development, not game ploying. I mentioned this to one of the fine computer lounge monitors, and 1 am sum ho im mediately forwarded my com ment to the lounge manager, being the eager employee he was As rising tuition und fees take u bigger bite out of student pocket books. I think it is our responsibility to comment on the use of our money in the stu dent community 1 was told by this employee that this is a shared resource und students could do whatever they want with the computers It is part of their fees. I wonder, when our fees go up in order to replace worn-out computers, will students appre ciate the freedom allowed their peers as they write out their tu ition checks? Steven Elliott Biology Not homophobic With the upcoming 19H2 election, Oregon has drawn the attention of the entire nation with its anti-guy rights hill, Measure 9. I am sure by now that most Oregonians have grown quite tired of hearing about it However, I would like to clarify our position. The OCA und its supporters are not "homophobic." They are merely responding to the menacing threats of a militant gay community. It is the radical homosexuals who have thrust this issue to the forefront of the political agenda After reviewing literature aUmt und by homosexuals, it is easy to sec that their main goal is to gratify their sexual desires at all costs, including having sex with our children Do you think Tin kidding? Twenty years ago one of the most prominent planks in the platform of the National Coali tion of Gay Organizations was to "repeal ull laws governing the age of sexual consent." They’ve never backed down on that point. Additionally, the N o r t h American Man/Boy Love Asso c iation, a radical, militant gay group, has as its motto. "Sex before eight, or it's too late*.” The homosexual agenda in cludes all the hate-filled, intol erant activities it accuses its op ponents of. ror thi! sake ot our lumllies, our children und our future, vote yes on Measure 9. Keith Cantrell Sweet Home Get informed Some people muy plan to vote in favor of Measure 9 be cnuso they don't want homo sexuals to have "special privi leges" or because they simply do not like homosexuals This isn't what Measure 9 is about By grouping homosexuality with pedophilia, sadism, and masochism. Measure 9 equates a manifestation of human sexu ality to acts of power and vio lence It perpetuates falsehoods concerning human sexuality — that sexuality is something cho sen or something that can he promoted or coerced, all of which researchers in human sexuality und the behavioral sciences refuted years ago Most dangerously. Measure 9 forces the state government to separate out from the main stream a group of its citizens us being "wrong, ubnormul, und perverse” and mandates cen sorship of them und discrimi nation against them. If you are considering voting for Measure 9, read the meas ure very carefully and think very hard about its ramifica tions What proponents of Measure 9 claim it proposes is not how it reads. Make your vote an informed one, not a blind, emotionul one.
