Harwell has also deflected two
passes, caused two fumbles and
had an interception against Stan
ford
Harwell had been relatively
injury free at Oregon until this
year when he suffered a broken
rib Harwell did not play last
week but said he is ready for Sat
urday's game against Arizona
Stale.
"I could have played last week

shot me up with anesthesia — but
we scored so fast there was no
need," Harwell said. "I don't
know why I have been so healthy;
the trainers tell me it is flexibil
ity. but I am not overly flexible
Last year I played with a sore
ankle all season and wasn’t even
close to 100 percent. I have also
had two knee operations, so I've
have had my owies.”
Harwell came to Oregon out of
California's Los Gatos High
School in 19«B after being named
as the outstanding defensive
player in the West Valley Athletic
League his senior year.
Harwell, a three year starter for
the Ducks, has been Oregon's
ironman during his career, start
ing 37 games including three this
year. Harwell started 2H consec
utive games until he was forced
to sit out the Ducks' victory over
Texas Tech last season.
Harwell is eighth on the all
time tackles list at Oregon with
319. He registered a career-high
112 tackles in 1990 and led the
Ducks last season with 100 tack
les. 40 of them unassisted
Harwell has made 16 tackles in
a game two times, including the
1'KK) Freedom Bowl game against
Colorado Stale He had a career
high 20 tackles in last season's
finale against Oregon State
Harwell had to struggle with
his emotions during last season
when personal tragedy hit him
hard. He came to camp in the fall
of 1991 knowing his father was
at home in the Bay Area dying of
cancer, fim Harwell died he fore
the season started and his son

son. although he didn't miss a
beat on the field.
“Last year I was playing in a
fog. 1 lost my will to play foot
ball.'' Harwell said. "I was basi
cally just running around the
field making tackles and didn't
gel excited about it I wasn't
having fun doing it When
something like that happens to
you. nothing else really mailers
Everything becomes pretty triv
ial.”
The bond between Harwell
father and son runs deep, and
Harwell said the death affected
his performance on the field
"I got through it but I didn't
get through it with flying col
ors.” Harwell said. "My heart
was definitely 600 miles south
My dad was always there for
me. and when I played, I felt
like he was always right there
with me,”
With bad memories of the 1991
season behind him. Harwell said
he and the rest of his teammates
are ready to get on with the new
season.
"I didn't have a great year last
year; I don't think anyone did."
Harwell said "We just have to
leave that one season where it is
It is nothing to lie proud of as far
as I am concerned."
With ail that has happened to
him m the last H months. Har
well said he has lost some of the
• ■motion for football that he had
When I was a freshman and
sophomore I wasn't crazy, but I
was always really excited." Par ■
well said Now I gel excited
when a big play happens, but t
don't, get as keyed up fftr,
I think that comes from age and
experience I just want to play at
a high level and slay there "
Despite what he says. Harwell
is still running from sideline to
sideline chasing down opposing
players with the same reckless
abandon as he has in the past
Not mam have noticed .toy falloff
in his performance, including his
coat h
”|oe has been one of the lead
ing lacklers in the conference."
Oregon head coach Rich Hrnoks
saift "He is an outstanding play
er Pro scouts don't drool over
him because of his size and
speed, but all he does is make
plays all over the field
Whether pro scouts come call
ing after ihe season or not does
not seem to he a major concern
to Harwell, as he places his own
opinions of himself above what
others think
"When I am done I want to
hang up my cleats without hav
ing any had feelings." Harwell
said "I want to remember iny last
season as a positive one."

the quarterbacks running for protection, register
ing three sacks in three games for the 2-2 Ducks.
Last season, Edwards started in Oregon's final
five games and tallied fivo sacks. He said he has
learned to develop a hunger for quarterbacks.
“You have to really want to get the quarter
back," Edwards said “It's something you have to
desire in your heart and in your mind ”
Edwards has also been a key to Oregon s new
found toughness against the run In the Ducks' last
two games, their opponents have run for a corn
bined 49 net rushing yards. On the season,
Edwards has 15 tackles and one deflected pass
•'Terrell brings to the lineup a physical guy with
tremendous speed." Oregon head coach Rich
Brooks said. "If he can have a healthy year, he'll
be one of the top players in the conference at his
position."
Edwards, however is not all that pleased with
his play so far this season
"I've played OK I think when I play well,
everybody will know," he said "I know when 1
play a great game "
