Harwell, a three year starter for the Ducks, has been Oregon's ironman during his career, start ing 37 games including three this year. Harwell started 2H consec utive games until he was forced to sit out the Ducks' victory over Texas Tech last season. Harwell is eighth on the all time tackles list at Oregon with 319. He registered a career-high 112 tackles in 1990 and led the Ducks last season with 100 tack les. 40 of them unassisted Harwell has made 16 tackles in a game two times, including the 1'KK) Freedom Bowl game against Colorado Stale He had a career high 20 tackles in last season's finale against Oregon State Harwell had to struggle with his emotions during last season when personal tragedy hit him hard. He came to camp in the fall of 1991 knowing his father was at home in the Bay Area dying of cancer, fim Harwell died he fore the season started and his son struggle.) withit; during thesea-. son. although he didn't miss a beat on the field. “Last year I was playing in a fog. 1 lost my will to play foot ball.'' Harwell said. "I was basi cally just running around the field making tackles and didn't gel excited about it I wasn't having fun doing it When something like that happens to you. nothing else really mailers Everything becomes pretty triv ial.” The bond between Harwell father and son runs deep, and Harwell said the death affected his performance on the field "I got through it but I didn't get through it with flying col ors.” Harwell said. "My heart was definitely 600 miles south My dad was always there for me. and when I played, I felt like he was always right there with me,” With bad memories of the 1991 season behind him. Harwell said he and the rest of his teammates are ready to get on with the new season. "I didn't have a great year last year; I don't think anyone did." Harwell said "We just have to leave that one season where it is It is nothing to lie proud of as far as I am concerned." With ail that has happened to him m the last H months. Oregon head coach Rich Hrnoks saift "He is an outstanding play er Pro scouts don't drool over him because of his size and speed, but all he does is make plays all over the field Whether pro scouts come call ing after ihe season or not does not seem to he a major concern to Harwell, as he places his own opinions of himself above what others think "When I am done I want to hang up my cleats without hav ing any had feelings." Last season, Edwards started in Oregon's final five games and tallied fivo sacks. He said he has learned to develop a hunger for quarterbacks. “You have to really want to get the quarter back," Edwards said “It's something you have to desire in your heart and in your mind ” Edwards has also been a key to Oregon s new found toughness against the run In the Ducks' last two games, their opponents have run for a corn bined 49 net rushing yards. On the season, Edwards has 15 tackles and one deflected pass •'Terrell brings to the lineup a physical guy with tremendous speed." Oregon head coach Rich Brooks said.
