Don’t know where to go? Start here By Christian deMaagd Emerald Contributor To both now and returning students: Welcome to Eugene! Close your textbooks! Even though school official ly begins next week, adjusting to the grind of academic solf abuse won't bo possiblo for at least anothor month. Trying to study alter scurrying- ail- -svec— campus will be an exercise in futility. If you don’t start study ing by 10 at night, forget it. Go get a drink. Where are you going to go? Here's a list of 10 places where people in Eugene go at night and on the woekonds. They're grouped according to their vari ous purposes — cafes, bars and/or clubs, and one poolhali The Glenwood (1340 Alder St., next door to 7-Elevon): "at mospheric." "austere” and "co pacetic” were the first throe words my friend thought of when asked to describe this place. Ignore her. Other than being closed between 9 p.m. Sunday and 7 a.m. Monday, the Glenwood is basically a 24 hour cafe. It’s the best place near campus to oat neo-bohe mian food (pretty good, not too expensive) and have those maddening late-night conversa tions that supposedly typify college life. Closer to downtown. Allann Brothers' Bakery it Coffee House (152 W. 5th Avo.), aka The Beanery, has better coffee than the Glonwood but not as much food. It's open until mid night every night. If you come early enough in the evening, you're likely to find at least n few games of chess going on Live acoustic music can ho hoard Thursday through Sun day nights. On the weekends, Eugene has a handful of bars where you can go for a drink, or dancing, or both. Noar campus, Guido's (801 E. 13th Avo ) and Rennie's Landing (1214 Kincaid St.) arc .y*.y.«.Uy. .r-rsrvT^ed -rr. - Friday and Saturday nights. Ronnie's — before it fills up — feels spa cious and relaxing. After 9:30 p m., however, crowd-o-phobia sets in. On a busy night, it takes about two weeks to get from tho second-floor binding to the downstairs bathroom. Guido's has a l)J, a dance floor and a disco ball hanging from tho ceiling The music, mostly top 40, randy surprises. Tho (lance floor is actually a pit. It’s the sort of place to start a relationship that you know will end by sunrise. One even ing last winter term. I over hoard an innuendo-drenched conversation between a woman wearing what looked like u black lace slip (in February!) und a plastered fratboy. When ho reached for her thigh, she spat on his band und hissed, "Not here, you freak.” Half-un hour later, they were gone, A better dance club than Gui do's is Club Arena (959 Pearl St ), downstairs from Perry's Restaurant The music mix is Turn to BARS/CLUBS.
