RuaaeU Whitt overcame a bout with the chicken pox and could ba lha kay to California overcoming the tough competition In the Pec-10. PAC-10 Continued from Page 7B loading receivers from a year ago. Washington's defense will suffer from the loss of Defen sive Lineman Steve fclmtman who left after his junior year and was the top pick in the NFL Draft. The Huskies still have six returning starters on defense, including throe in one of the nation’s best secondaries. Coming off last season's co national championship. James is taking a humble approach to the 1992 season. "Wo are just as hungry as last season, just not as talented," James said. Predicted Finish: 11-1, 7-1 in Pac-tO. Stanford Cardinal Laat Yaar: 8-4. 6-2 in Pac 10 (tied for 2nd). Lost to Georgia Tech in Aloha Bowl. Bill Walsh returns to Stan ford as head coach, making the Cardinal one of tho most talknd-about teams in the na tion. The defense returns 10 starters from last year's team, but a lack of depth could hurt them if injuries become a prob lem. Tho offense lost five of last year's starting crow, including fullback "Touchdown" Tommy Vardoll (1,084 yards. 20 TDs) and leading receiver Chris Walsh, (66 catches for 034 yards). Returning is junior Steve Stonslrom, who led tho Pac-10 in passing efficiency last soa son, completing over 60 per cent of his passes. Walsh will no doubt get the most out of Stenstrom, which should be enough to keep tho Cardinal near the top of the conference. Predicted Finish: 8-4, 6-2 in Pac-10. California Golden Beers Last Year: 10-2, 6-2 In Pac-10 (tied for 2nd). Defeated Clemson In Florida Citrus Bowl. The Bears had their winning est season in decades last sea son, but the off-season brought with it an equal share of losses. Cal lost head coach Bruce Sny der to Arizona State, all Pac-10 quarterback Mike Pawlawski to graduation and leading rusher Russell White, (1,177 yards last year), to chicken pox. The latter 5 has returned after missing a couple weeks of practico, nut the Bears will struggle to re place the other two. Keith Gilbertson replaces Snyder and has the unenviable task of filling the shoes of 10 starters lost from lust year's learn. Gilbertson does have the schedule in hi* favor Cal could easily win it* first four games before facing Washington and USC in back-to-back road games. Watch for the California-Arl zona State match-up in the sec Turn to PAC-10. Page 11B BIKE SALE! Start your new school year off right with some new wneeis at great prices Featuring.
