LETTERS Disgraceful 1 was sent an invitation through campus mail to attend a talk by an engineer, Dr. Otto Helweg, on "Ethics and Mod ern Man " In his talk. Helweg made the incredible assertion that the ethical values of athe ists and agnostics completely lack any validity. Ho went on to say that nil non-Christians possess ethical values that are seriously flawed. Astonished. I pressed him on these issues af ter his talk, and he reiterated his claims. Further, ho ad vanced the notion that the con stitutional rights of nlheists and agnostics should be more re stricted than those enjoyed by Christians Blind bigotry and intolerance of other religious views are not new, but I find it disgusting I was truly amazed to hear a talk of this caliber at an institution of higher learning. This kind of intolerance in the past has en abled people to dehumanize follow human beings and justi fy crimes of violence against "worthless" people. And though it has enjoyed a remark able renaissance and political legitimization in the Reugnn and Bush years, I continue to bo astounded each time I en counter such bigotry. 1 feel that the University Campus Evangelical Ministries, the Baptist Student Union, the Campus Crusade for Christ, the Collegiate Christian Fellow ship, and the Faith Center, as the organizers, owe the Univer sity community an apology fur this disgraceful event.
