Get involved or else higher ed goes away Cut, slash, slid-, dissect and gut. That's what's go ing to happen to the Oregon higher ed budget Thank you so much, Measure 5 College students really do appreciate it. On Tuesday. Chancellor Thomas Bartlett gave the higher education board a list of recommendations for cutting the system's budget by 20 percent in the ()r> biennium The list was just the first step in the trimming process (College administrators will get their turn soon, and the board will vote on < uts tins July Any wav you look at it. the I niversitv as well as the rest of the state higher ed system - is in trouble Bartlett's recommendations would slash $ 1 f>2 million from the < urront budget. No campuses would close — thev'd just hi’ sliced into minute bits And while all of this was going on. what were students doing1’ Most of them definitely weren't at Lane Community (College Tuesday afternoon to meet with the OSSHIi tuition committee and discuss ways out of this finam ml quagmire It i an t lie stated more clearly It students don't take more of an active in terest in what's going on If students don't take more of an active interest in what’s going on in the smoke filled budget rooms, the whole higher education system will collapse like a house of cards in a tornado. in (he .smoke tilled budget rooms, (lie whole higher educ ation system will c ol lapse like .c house ot cards in a tornado. Education isn t just important it's absolutely vital to exist in today's society And this state is on a path back to the heady days when only the upper-middle class and above could atlord college. Wouldn’t that be neat' So this is a plea to both sides, students and admin istrators It you're taking classes, remember that you are responsible for protecting that right for future stu dent generations Write letters to Congress, the Oregon Legislature, the governor or the board of higher educa tion Tell them you ysant to keep tuition affordable and stop the dwindling of programs. To those1 making up the budget, think of the state s priorities If education is the key to the future, as we’ve all been told, then keeping aci ess to colleges and uni verxities is vital, lake notice of what students *ire say ing.
