Senate nets fish bill
Oregon Sen Hob I’nckwood announced last
week that the l' S Senate passed a hill that would
end drift net fishing earlier than the deadline ere
ated by the I lilted Nations
Drill nets are particularly harmful to sea crea
lures because they entrap and kill not only fish,
hut any other <x nan life that gets c aught in them
The I' N resolution called for a moratorium on
high-seas drift nets by Dei .11.
1'ai kwood said in a letter that the hill passed by
both the House and Senate would speed up the
bun by requiring the president to impose sum
lions on any fish prrxlut ts or fish from a country
in violation ol the ban
However, fief.ire being enacted, the bill must
still lx- approved by the president
