EDITORIAL U.S. shouldn’t risk others for profit So what if it's a killer. As long as it means money, just call the United States Limits*Aren’t-Us. U.S. tobacco farmers will receive S3.5 million this year in federal money to promote overseas sales of their product. The agriculture department's gift is an answer to the falling American demand for tobacco, a probable result of the anti smoking/health wise cam paigns launched during the last several years. This type of scheme should sound familiar After all. it's not the first time the United States has risked the health of other countries* residents, all for a profit. Even worse, it's using tax monies to do it. Examples abound, and look, here's one now: Pesti cides. The demand for them hero in the states slowed down in the 1980s — thanks in part to bans on certain chemicals. So. in our capitalistic wisdom, America simply increased exportation of those chemicals that were no longer allowed here. And when the United " Nations passed a resolu tion in 1983 ( ailing (or re strictions on tiie export of products whose use has been banned in the ex porting nation. guess who refused? Yep. President Reagan, arguing in Ins in Finite logo that those countries importing our banned products should be tree to do so if they ___ choose, and that if we didn't sell them the products, someone else would Ironically, banned pesticides continue to pollute the food Americans eat via imports. Talk about bad karma. It's great that American health campaigns have gone so well; It’s just too bad the message gets turned back at the borders. It's great that American health campaigns have gone so well: it s just too bad the message gets turned back at the borders Obviously. U.S. mentality hasn't vet developed to the point of seeing the big picture And so it goes with the promotion of American to bacco overseas. Using tax monies for promoting the use of a sub slum e that kills is about as backward as national policy can get Granted, our tobacco farmers need the contin ued income, but the other sides of the dice need to be considered. Is it worth our tax dollars to make sure sales go on as usual? Could we use the mnoev in a bet ter wuy to remedy the situation — one that doesn't in volve death — perhaps7 As big and almighty as we ma> think we are. the United States Is part of the world community It's time we began acting that vs.iv.
