The Southern Poverty Law Center and its
Klanwatch Project will provide a discussion panel

Varied entertainment will be held at the Oerlinger
Alumni Lounge. Acts include the Children’s Rain

Seattle Mayor Norman Rice will speak at Beall Con
cert Hall
Mississippi Burning
The film and a following discussion are presented in
the Carson Hall Gold Room by the Residence Hall
Governing Council.

Afrikan Dance Class and Demo
Bruce Smith from the Northwest Afrikan Ballet
Company will perform with others in the Ballroom.

Cajun Workshop
D.L. Menard and the Louisiana Aces will be in the

Community in Unity for MLK Days
Music, an international fashion show and a guest
speaker are included in the city’s events in studio
one of the Hult Center for the Performing Arts.

World Beat Dance Concert
Admission is $4 for students, $6 for general public,
and $2 for children age ten and under. Perform
ances will be in the Ballroom

This film will be featured by the Rhythmic Global

Monday, Jan. 21
UO Martin Luther King, Jr. Conference
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Conference is a
whole-day event honoring the civil rights leader. It
begins at 9:30 a m. and continues until evening.
Daytime events including a talk by Attallah
Shabazz, daughter of Malcom X, at 1 p.m. will lx- in
the EMU Ballroom.

main lobby.

Bruce Smith of the Northwest Afrikart Ballet
Company. The company is noted by its audi
ences for the dancer’s high-energy dance move
ments.
Also on Saturday, a World Beat Dance Con
cert at 7 p.m. will be opened by the local Eugene
band, Moretime, followed by music from the
Balafon Marimba Ensemble.
The World Beat Dance Concert is one of the
few events during the celebration that charges an
admission fee. Tickets are at the door for Uni
versity students, $6 for the general public, and $2
lor children age 10 and under.
On Sunday, a fellowship in the Willamette
Hall Atrium will feature a speech about King by
Dr. Quintard Taylor, a history professor at Uni
versity. During the fellowship there will l>e gospel
music and discussion of King’s life.
"It’s going to be a fun time as well as a spiritual
time," Pearl Hill, director of Upward Bound and
a member of MLKCC, said. "It will be an oppor
tunity for the greater community to share with
the University community."
To round out the week of celebration, Mon
day, Jan. 21 will be devoted to a conference for
the community and students to learn about a
wide selection of subjects.
There will be almost 20 sessions to choose
from, all described inside the calendar listing the
week’s events.
Child care and sign language will be provided
at the conference, when necessary.
