Ducks should fight for bowl bid again next year
By Ashley Conklin
Emerald Spoils Editor
ANAHKIM. Calif With
two straight howl appearances,
the Oregon football team has
established itself as a legitimate
howl contender
Now. the next step for the
Dm ks is to continue their up
ward i limb in making it to big
ger and belter Ixivvl games eat h
year Steps one and two are in
place with bar k to hack appear
ames in the Independence and
Freedom Bowls.
Step three is to make another
bowl game next year, one with
more national recognition and
exposure than the Freedom
Bowl
In the moments following the
disappointing Freedom Bow!
loss to Colorado State, it was
hard for (loach Ku h Brooks and
the players to reflect on what
was an otherwise great season
fur the Ducks
Hut despite the .'12-31 set
hack Oregon still had a great
season, in fact better than <i
year ago when it also finished
8 4 after heating Tulsa in
Shreveport. I.a
The one thing the Durks
have done the pas! two seasons
is show thev i an replace ke\
players lost to graduation or in
jury and not "fall off the face of
the earth" .is Hrooks often says
Considering the Dm ks lost
sut h stars as Derek Uivilte. l„it
in Berry. ('hris Oldham. David
('usann and Mark Kearns after
last season, players like Sean
Hurwell. Ngalu kelerneni,
Daryle Smith. Marcus Woods
and lames Bautista showed
they were more than adequate
replacements
The key for Brooks and his
staff during spring drills and
fall camp next year is to find
players to replace the likes of
Hill Musgrave. Scot Boatright
Ioc Keit/.ug. Holer Hrantlov and
Rory Dairy

tion for Brooks and coordinator
Mike Heilotti is who is going to
replace Musgrave.
With the signing of junior
college all-American Brett
Salisbury from I’alomar Junior
College in California, the Ducks
should have a legitimate re
plai ement for Musgrave if vet
eran Boh Brothers and new
comers Danny O’Neil and Mus
grave s brother Doug don't
prove to be the answer.
Most likely Salisbury will be
the starter from the opening of
spring drills. Salisbury will be
eligible for spring practice and
tin; signing of a first team all
American |C means Brooks
doesn’t plan to sit him on the
bench.
Oregon does have five return
ing starters on offense in
Burwell and Kelemeni in the
backfield. Bud Bowie and Da
vid Collinsworth at guard and
tackle, respectively, and tight
end Jeff Thomason.
The Ducks are very deep
when it comes to running backs
as ful I bat ks |uan Shedrick and
Brandon Jumper, who should
be back from knee surgery, re
turn as does Howard Blackwell.
Tight end is another strong
area with Thomason. Vince
Kerry, who took over when
Thomason missed the last three
games with a fractured ankle,
and Dan Mitchell
The key concerns are finding
a center to replace Boatright
and somebody to fill Reitzug
and Michael McClellan's shoes
at wide receiver.
If the Dim ks fill those areas,
and tind a quarterback to re
place Musgrave. they very like
ly will be back in a bowl, and
probably a better and bigger
ImiwI than the Independence or
Freedom Bowls.
