Ducks meet California in key game
By Ashley Conklin
Emerald Sports Editor
When California and Oregon have met on the
football field in past years, little has been at stake
except for maybe which team would have three
wins instead of two.
This is a different season though, and when the
Golden Bears and Ducks meet at 1 p m. Saturday
in Berkeley. Calif., a bowl game is on the line for
Cal while both teams are fighting for second
place in the Pacific-10 Conference.
Oregon. 7-2 overall and 3-2 in the Pac-10,
seemingly has a howl game clinched already,
having accepted a tentative offer from the Free
dom Bowl. Cal (5-3-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the
conference) meanwhile, needs at least a win
against the Ducks or Stanford next week to secure
a Copper Bowl bid.
While Oregon was in a bowl game last season.
Cal hasn't been to post-season action since 1979.
when the Golden Bears lost to Temple in the Gar
den State Bowl. 28-17
In fact. Cal was 4-7 last season and hasn't been
above 500 since it went 7-4 under |oe Kapp in
1982
"I think they're clearly the most improved
team in the league." Oregon Coach Rich Brooks
said. "I think this team has a lot of weapons, a lot
of talent.
"Cal has a great deal to gain in this game if
they can beat us." he said "They can move back
into second place in the league, and in all prob
ability secure a bowl bid."

The Cougars split last
weekend's matches with a

"They've got some good

"Hopefully we will be ready
