Ducks meet California in key game By Ashley Conklin Emerald Sports Editor When California and Oregon have met on the football field in past years, little has been at stake except for maybe which team would have three wins instead of two. This is a different season though, and when the Golden Bears and Ducks meet at 1 p m. Saturday in Berkeley. Calif., a bowl game is on the line for Cal while both teams are fighting for second place in the Pacific-10 Conference. Oregon. 7-2 overall and 3-2 in the Pac-10, seemingly has a howl game clinched already, having accepted a tentative offer from the Free dom Bowl. Cal (5-3-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the conference) meanwhile, needs at least a win against the Ducks or Stanford next week to secure a Copper Bowl bid. While Oregon was in a bowl game last season. Cal hasn't been to post-season action since 1979. when the Golden Bears lost to Temple in the Gar den State Bowl. 28-17 In fact. Cal was 4-7 last season and hasn't been above 500 since it went 7-4 under |oe Kapp in 1982 "I think they're clearly the most improved team in the league." Oregon Coach Rich Brooks said. "I think this team has a lot of weapons, a lot of talent. "Cal has a great deal to gain in this game if they can beat us." he said "They can move back into second place in the league, and in all prob ability secure a bowl bid."
