Candidates differ on views of country’s future
District 4 race not expected to be very close |
By Rene DeCair
Emerald Reporter
Incumbent Demin r.rl I’eter Delazio and
Ins Libertarian challenger. Tonic Nathan,
have radii ally different philosophies and
goals for the country's future if they are
elected to the l1 S Mouse seat in District -I
Although they share some common
ground on the issue of abortion, it is i Icar
that they do not agree on much else ir)
their race for Distrirl 4. which spans from
north of Eugene to Hrookings on the south
ern ()regnu coast
"We Libertarians say we re pro-choice
on everything." Nathan said
Although Nathan is opposed to legisla
tion that would ban abortions or require
parental notification lieforc a minor could
have an abortion, site said she docs not
support state-funded abortions Taxpayers
should not pay "lor what other people lx*
lieve is murder." she said
Nathan said she looks to advam ing te< h
oology to support her positions With new
tei hnologv. fetuses arc able to lie implant
ed ill >i "host" and preserved for other pen
pie who want children Hei ause of this she
believes it is not economically wist* to de
stroy fetuses "The idea of destroying
something that is marketable is sills if
there's <i market for it." she said
DcTa/.io agrees with his challenger that
alxirtion dei isions should lie made by the
individual, whether they are minors or not
'They 're old enough and mature enough
to make their own de< isions." Del'a/.io
said " The issue for a lot of young people
is that there is a breakdown in < ommuiiica
lion (in their families)
Despite their similar views on abortion
the (undulates differ on a broad spei truin
of issues ranging from environmental con
i erns and higher education to child care
Moreover. DeFazio and Nathan dis
agree about the government's role in
funding education
Delazio said if re-elei ted he would
work to prevent President George
Hush's likely proposed cuts in grants
and loans in order to preserve the cur
rent levels of government funding De
Fazio would like to go track to the lev
ids of funding that were provided for
students ten years ago. which is about
tilt to 70 percent more than what is
now available.
Ikd azio said he would also like to
alroiish the current student loan sys
tem and would create a new program
to provide funds for students. He calls
for a system in which the government
would loan money dins tl\ to students
and not through a bank, ho said. This
would save both the government and
students time and money In eliminat
ing the interest rales i harged by tranks,
he said
Hut in the end. he (relieves his plan
would "falter on the so-called educa
tion president' who doesn't want to
improve the edut ation of our youth."
Del’a/. 10 said
Nathan, on the other hand, said she
would move to decrease funding for
grants and loans, adding that she
would go so fur as voting to quit taxing
i Itizens
At least 40 percent of a person's income
goes to government, where two-thirds of it
is spent on administrative costs, she said
Nathan lielieves that money could go back
to the people if federal programs were cut
Then people could send themselves to
si hool with the money saved, she said
Regarding tin- environment. Nathan said
she would work to repeal tile Kndangered
Spei ies At t i laimmg that it is outdated,
and that she would work to get rid of the
