Prejudice inhibits
productive ability
()iSi rimination is a word we hear tar Inn often in
utii conversations, hi the media and even in the pages
nt the Oregon Ihtilv Hmenihl Although it is important
to bring disi.riinination out in the open, it A distress
ing to see people use it as <i method of closing others
out.
There are mole than ton groups on rumpus, each
will) its own purpose and direction There are mam
oc.c asions for groups to work together to put on events
create awareness ol specific problems 01 Mist to gel
things ac c omplished taster
l'nfortunatelv. disc rimination or presumed ills
c rimination < an keep groups from working together or
oven communicating with ear h other
Hut sometimes it seems that people will use a pre
sumed disc rimination to avoid working with a group
oi organi/.ation If .1 group feels that .111 organization is
homophobic" 01 "sexist," for example, tliev will
avoid c nntact u ith that group and affix a label to them
I lie Student Insurgent is a good example Minority
student groups have decided to publish then own
newsletter instead of publishing in the "rac 1st" Insur
gent \ow tlie Insurgent is angry because it had hoped
to be a voice for all voiceless student groups
Some also c omplnin that the Survival ('enter makes
too little* effort to aft rue t minontv student involvement,
and that is a predomiiiautlv white male establishment
I lie topic ol a workshop last weekend was "Sex
ism 111 the I’em e Movement It was open to Ml wom
en: no ini'll were allowed This seems only to furthei
the separation between the sexes, c ausing men in some
campus groups to jokingly say thev would have ,i
male - c hi I v workshop
All c ampus groups are subjei t to some kind of dis
ciimination complaint, whether it be that thev are
white liberal, conservative, racist sexist, whatever It
is almost unavoidable We develop a stereotype of an
organization and greet eac h member with that stereo
type in mind This is a form of disc rimination
When we emphasize the differences between each
othei. we onlv create a deeper rift that will lie harder to
bridge Kile ism. sexism, homophobia or a 11 \ kind of
disc lamination c reates a bloc kade in communication.
It is v ital that we work together cm projects, be
cause* it's the only wav to have an effective impact or
c ause ,inv real c hange We need to stop discriminating
and perpetrating ideas lh.it cause discrimination We
c an not let it keep us apart
This is nut to deny the validity of a disc rimination
c omplaint Rather it is to point out that the only way to
solve* these problems is to step beyond labeling, and
work to c reate open lines nt communication and un
derstanding between all groups
