National
Coast Guard looks for cocaine
C.AIA'KSTON, Texas (AP) The Coast Cuaril
has set up regular patrols of desolate stretches of
beach since sealed par kages of cocaine have been
washing ashore for more than a week
"If anybody finds any of it. I hope nobody
opens the package," said Coast (mart! Petty Offi
cer James Gutknecht. at the Port O'Connor sta
tion. "This cocaine is pretty potent stuff ”
Gutknecht said offic ials aren't sure exar tlv how
many packages have washed up so tar from what
some believe is cargo from a drug smuggler's
ship that went down in Tropical Storm Allison
three weeks ago
Similar packages have been found in Aransas
Pass. Port Aransas, in the Port O'Connor area and
on beaches in Matagorda County, said U S Cus
toms Agent Cliff Wolfe in Houston
The largest find was 55 pounds of ( ocaine. val
ued at an estimated $2.5 million. The cocaine
was wrapped in plastic, tied with rope and
marked with the word "centavo," Wolfe said
“They meant for it to stay dry. and it was still
dry. despite the fact it obviously had been in the
water for some time," he said, noting that barna
cles were growing on the packages
Galveston County Sheriff |oe Max Taylor said
these are the first instances of cocaine being
washed up on beaches although bales ot marijua
na have washed up in the past.

1.
Pendleton, like all the airports chosen for
Wright’s trip, was selected as a landing spot be
cause it is in the corner of the state and requires
less flight time to reach than any other in the
state.

Guardsmen to fight drugs
PORTLAND (AP) Thirty six members of the
Oregon National Ouard will join in the fight
against gang violence and drug dealing in Port
land. Mayor Hud Clark and slate officials said
Wednesday.
The first National (iuard troops reported to
work s\ ith the Portland Police Human and the Or
egon State Police late last week, said Con Trod
Rees, the guard's direi tor for Oregon The rest of
the troops will join in the effort by the end of this

urging local industrial plants to c ut emissions
that contribute to the "aroma of Tacoma

where companies would state in writing their in
tent to replace or upgrade equipment to minimize
pollution, and urging the Puget Sound Air Pollu
tion Control Agency to hire more enforcement
personnel to start inspecting plants
The council will vote on whether to supply
funds for the inspections, and will ask the c ity of
Tacoma to pitch in The cost could he as mm h .is
$181,000. depending on the level of enforcement.
