_Sports Women's basketball starts off winning season By Ashley Conklin Emerald Contributor The Oregon women's basketball team began its 1988-89 season last Friday night at McArthur Court with an 80-59 exhibition victory over the touring New Zealand national team. The Ducks got solid efforts from ev eryone in the line-up to offset the loss of point guard Vonda Anderson, out due to academic reasons. Anderson will be able to play next term however. Oregon looked inside to 6-foot-7 Stef anie Kasperski early in the game and went outside with Jacquie Semeniuk and Brigid Evans in the second half. Semeniuk led the Ducks with 13 points while Evans and Kasperski tal lied 10 apiece. The Kiwis got a game-high 22 points and a game-high 11 rebounds from Sheryl George. “Overall 1 was quite pleased.” Ore gon head coach Elwin Heiny said. "I was pleased with our team enthusiasm and that we appeared to have fun.” Oregon's defense limited New Zea land to a .328 clip from the field and out-boarded the Kiwis 47-38. The Ducks took the lead for good in the contest at the 11:26 mark in the first half on a Kasperski basket and led 41-28 at the half after two Michelle Kble three pointers. Oregon controlled the second half, scoring the first 10 points. Semeniuk scored eight points in a two-minute span to put the Ducks up 56-31 with 11:45 left. From there Oregon coasted to the win, leading as much as 75-46 with 3:20 remaining. Despite the sloppiness of the first game of the season (25 Duck turnovers), Oregon did shoot .516 from the field and got contributions from many play ers, something Heiny liked. “We had so many people who per formed well,” he said. “Playing tonight will help us work on what needs to be improved and gave several new people the opportunity to show what they can do.” Heiny was especially pleased with the inside "play of Trina McCartney, who will be a key player this season after the graduation of Kris Glidden, and the all around play of Semeniuk. From here the Ducks will open the regular season next Saturday against Concordia at Mac Court. . " ' “ Photo by Andn* R*nirrl Oregon's Jacquie Semeniuk looks for an opening against the New Zealand team, and more often than not found one, scoring a team-high 13 points. Beavers Continued from Page 7 age, threw for only 57 yards on the day. On the other side of the ball, Pete Nelson and Bob Brothers combined for only seven completions on 26 at tempts for 79 yards. Brian Taylor’s 27-yard burst opened the scoring for OSU, but Derek Loville’s 12-yard scamper with 4:18 left in the second quarter put the Ducks on top 10-7. With Wilhelm struggling, the Beavers kept it on the ground, and Chaffey's two-yard run midway through the fourth pe riod gave OSU the lead for good. ‘‘We knew (Wilhelm) was go ing to come out throwing the ball,” said Oregon cornerback Chris Oldham. “But we stayed close on (their receivers), and he ended up throwing the ball out of bounds or getting sacked. They did a good job running the ball.'' Oldham held OSU’s all-Pac 10 receiver Robb Thomas to no catches, but it was the interfer ence call on Oldham in the Or egon end zone that set up Chaffey’s first TD run. “I think it was a good call be cause I tried to get around him (Jason Kent), and when 1 went to the right he stepped to the right and I came up on his back.’' Oldham said. The loss also pul a damper on Derek Loville's clay. The Ducks' junior tailback ran for 117 yards, giving him 1,068 yards on the season, the second most in Oregon history. Oregon can still restore some respect to its season with a win over Hawaii in Honolulu in two weeks, but with the way things are going, Brooke may have to regard it as an early vacation and plan for next season. While the Ducks hang their heads low with a <i-f> record (3-5 in the conference), Beaver fans are celebrating their teams' 4-6-1 finish (2-5-1 in confer ence). The feeling is an empty one for Duck players and fans alike — there's joy in Corvallis, but it's a sad day for the state of Or egon when the state bragging rights are held by the Oregon State Beavers.
